5 Sleep Mistakes That Are Ruining Your Health

in health •  7 years ago

Lack of sleep is not a new problem for this age of humanity. We often complain other about how we aren’t getting enough sleep, daytime drowsiness, and not able to sleep during the night.

The people surrounding you will suggest you count the sheep or listen to a lullaby, but how effective are they? Sometimes, they may work. But most of the times they don’t.

Now the question is, why on the earth it all happens with you? Why aren’t you able to sleep at night and why you face a lack of sleep?
There are various sleep mistakes you’re making, but here are the most common sleep mistakes that will ruin your health, and how to avoid them.
Let’s get started.

1. Caffeine Overdose

Caffeine is a stimulant and in moderate doses can block sleep neurotransmitters causing insomnia.
If you have a habit of drinking coffee after 12 noon, there are great chances that you won’t be able to fall sleep later in the day.

Solutions:

• Instead of coffee, try to eat snacks on food that contains Tryptophan.
• Try to avoid caffeinated drinks after 12 PM in noon
• Increase the amount of yoghurt, milk, banana and turkey as they contain Tryptophan.

2. You’re Sleeping with Pets

Studies show that, around 63% of pet owners who share their beds with their pet experience poor sleep quality.

Solutions:

• Keep your pet in a different room or have a separate bed.
• If your pet is noisy, consult a vet.

3. Hitting the Snooze Button

The amount of extra sleep after you hit snooze button is fragmented, poor quality sleep. When you try to sleep after hitting the snooze, your body will prepare itself for another round of sleep, which never gets completed.

It results in fatigue throughout the day.

Solutions:

• Set your alarm to the exact time you need to get up.
• Try to set it on the same time every day, and after a while your body will adapt to it. And you won’t even need an alarm clock to wake you up.

4. Using Mobiles/Laptops before Bed

The gadgets you use emits blue lights which are said to delay the production of Melatonin. Melatonin is the sleep-inducing hormone.

Solutions:
• Stop using your gadgets before going to bed.
• Keep your smartphone away from your reach on the bed.

5. Sleeping on an Uncomfortable Mattress

And the last major mistake, you might be making is sleeping on an old, demolished, and firm-less mattress.

A quality mattress can ensure you a good night sleep and keep your from waking up with body aches.

Solution:

• Do not use a mattress for more than 5-8 years. If that’s the case, get rid of your mattress and buy a new one.
Of the above-mentioned sleep mistakes, how many are you guilty of? Or are you still repeating the same mistakes and complaining about health issues?

It’s the time to change your sleeping habits.

I am guilty of 3 and 4. But its difficult not to have phone closeby. It serves as alarm sometimes, you might have an urgent call at midnight too. Phone is just essential. How do we keep them far?.

It used to be that children in your bed affected your sleep. Nowadays it's little dogs, instead.

so true. pets have very much become pets for a lot of people who used to have kids instead!

Good posting.
