14 Things You Can Eat When Fasting

When people are fasting, they get hungry, obviously. This hunger usually subsides after 3-5 days, but for those "hangry" moments, there are certain foods you can eat which won't interfere with the health benefits of your fast.

I do what is referred to as "intermittent fasting" because there is tons of research showing the health benefits of this lifestyle habit. The way I do it is to eat only within an 8-hour window each day. That leaves 16 hours per day when I'm not eating, so my cells can clean themselves out and reset.

If you are fasting and you are urgently hungry, the best thing to do is to gut it out (unless you have a diagnosed hypoglycemia issue) because hunger is a good thing in the case of a fast since it means the autophagy process has begun, which is the cellular version of a detox.

If you can't gut it out, first make sure you are hydrated and that you have recently drunk a ton of filtered water. If you haven't, drink at least 8 ounces and wait 20 minutes. If you are still famished, then eat from the following list of options (organic only). These are "negative calorie" foods (to a point) that won't stop the fast or interfere with the benefits.

  1. Up to 50 calories of seaweed, or
  2. Up to two celery stalks, or
  3. Up to 2 oz. of pickled ginger, or
  4. Up to 3 oz. of pickles/zucchini/cucumber, or
  5. Up to 4 oz. of sauerkraut, or
  6. Up to 6 oz. protein drink (with up to 15 grams protein), or
  7. Up to 8 oz. bone broth (with spices and salt if desired), or
  8. Up to one egg (hard boiled or cooked another way without oil or butter), or
  9. Unlimited apple cider vinegar, or
  10. Unlimited tea and coffee (with stevia, lo han or erythritol if sweetener is needed), or
  11. Unlimited apple cider vinegar, or
  12. Unlimited tea and coffee (with stevia, lo han or erythritol if sweetener is needed), or
  13. Unlimited leafy greens with a splash of vinegar and salt to taste
  14. Unlimited habanero peppers (just kidding, but also not)

Hope this helps! Fasting is awesome and you should do it (unless you have a medical condition that prohibits it).
