Keto and Me, a Diabetic Journey #10 - Eating Keto on the Go!steemCreated with Sketch.

It happens to all Ketonians at some point along our journey. We are out in the world running around and putting out one fire after another and realize it’s time to refuel. Unfortunately, we didn’t plan for this adventure and the need for Keto friendly nourishment arises.

Sure, a thoughtfully tucked away Keto friendly protein bar or a bag of rinds may do the trick in a pinch. But what happens if you need to attend an impromptu work meeting at an unfamiliar restaurant? If your colleagues are unaware of your fanatical lifestyle or you are meeting with a new client, you do not want to draw attention to your “alternative” eating habits.

Here are a few tips that I like use when needed…

Get a salad bowl!

Go heavy on the cheese, sour cream, and guacamole/avocado. Add bacon or steak to a Cobb salad to show your progressive style and give a nod to traditional “healthy” choices.

Protein Style!

Often restaurants will have an “Off the Menu” option that eliminates most carbs and delivers just fat filled protein. This Keto hack can be disguised as a lettuce wrap or something similar because eateries are becoming more flexible to the changing habits of their patrons.

BBQ!

If you have the opportunity to steer the location of the working lunch or after-hours meeting, BBQ is a great choice (as long as everyone is cool with finger food) because this is a carnivore’s holy feast! Plenty of choices from ribs to chicken to brisket and all the Keto yumminess you can get (literally) your hands on. Plus, the greens are ridiculously good! Collard, beet, spinach and the like can be a fantastic accompaniment to the slow cooked protein choices

Stay away from the sides at a BBQ joint because they are ladened with carbohydrates of the most destructive kind. Let your buddies eat all the beans, potatoes, corn bread they want while you sit silently enjoying you BBQ paradise!

Charcuterie Plate!

Charcuterie is the branch of cooking devoted to prepared meat products, such as bacon, ham, or sausage primarily from pork. Often this option will also have cheese and nuts to round out the offering. This will allow you to take your dining experience into the upper echelons of fine dining. A little knowledge of the cuisine beforehand will allow you to impress and keep you far away from the carb wagon.

Fast Food!

Finally, this is probably the most difficult one of them all due to the limited menu and the assembly line used by most places. However, more and more chains are flexible to dietary adjustments. Carbo Nada, Animal Style, Carnivore, “Just the Squeal” are some of the catch phrases that let the order taker know you don’t want the bun, wrap, or taco shell. For other places, a friendly request of “Please hold the bread” or whatever high carb item off your order. I have yet to encounter anyone who is not willing to accommodate my request.
