5 Reasons to Use Coconut Oil as Toothpaste

in health •  8 years ago  (edited)

Our oral health is of equal importance to our physical health. If you don’t give importance to it, virus and bacteria may enter, causing complications in your inner body. Hence, we have to take care of our dental health properly.

When it comes to caring for your oral health, a toothpaste is often sought after. Sad to say, not all toothpastes are healthy options. There are those commercial brands that are manufactured with chemicals like propylene glycol, triclosan, and diethanolamine, which are not safe for the body.

But you still have a reason to rejoice. Coconut oil is here and it does a pretty good job at keeping the mouth free from bacteria-causing germs. In fact, it is also widely used in oil pulling. So why should you use this oil than other well-known toothpaste brands? Here are some reasons.

1. It doesn’t contain harmful chemicals.

Unlike conventional toothpastes, organic coconut oil does not contain triclosan, an antibacterial chemical that is often linked to issues related to antibiotic resistance. Aside from that, it does not have fluoride, which is an industrial waste product that is toxic to the body, even in the slightest amounts.

2. It wards off cavity-causing bacteria.

Based on research, massaging coconut oil into the gums for at least 10 minutes a day can significantly ward-off plaque and other decay-causing bacteria. Doing this continuously for three weeks can further improve the results.

3. It does not have any foaming agents.

If you notice, most toothpastes appear foamy when brushed into the teeth. Well, that is because they contain surfactants, which unfortunately interfere with the functioning of the taste buds. As a result, we usually taste bitter every after we brush. For that, coconut oil makes a great addition to your oral hygiene. It does not just keep the balance in your taste buds; it also has effective antibacterial properties.

4. It is pocket-friendly.

You only need a small amount of coco oil to keep your teeth clean. So if you have a jar of organic virgin coconut oil, you’ll have a toothpaste that’ll last for months! That makes it a cost-efficient solution.

5. It is easy to make.

To create a toothpaste out of this wonder oil, you usually need two things – coconut oil and baking soda. But for a more fragrant solution, you can always add essential oils like peppermint as it helps prevent the formation of cavities.

Who knew that nature has the best and most natural solution to keep our breath fresh and our teeth healthy? Well, at the end of the day, our oral health will still depend on us. Always make it a point to brush your teeth, unless you want to suffer the consequences.
