8th March 2018 was world kidney day and it happened to coincide with international women's
The theme for this years celeberstion was kidney and women's health
In commemoration of this day, health workers from Abia State University Teaching Hospital took to the streets for a rally to create awareness on the need to take care of your kidneys.
We went into the market places to educate the women on the importance of the kidneys in our overall health and well-being
Finally we returned to the hospital premises where we conducted free vital signs check including blood pressure check also we carried out simple kidney function tests like urinalysis.
Other things we did for the public includes free weight and height measurements so as to calculate body mass index of those who showed up
why the focus on women in this worlds kidney day celebration?
- Because whatever you eat or drink affects your kidneys .
- Women are the bedrock of the home and society.
- They have a great influence on our day to day diet, thus they have a great influence on the health of our kidneys.
WHAT AND WHAT CONSTITUTES HEALTHY HABBITS FOR HEALTHY KIDNEYS
- Drinking lots of water daily, at least 8 glasses a day.
- Eating fresh organic foods regularly.
- Emtying the bladder as soon as possible whenever you feel pressed.
- Maintaining good hygiene to prevent urinary tract infections.
- Getting prompt and appropriate treatment whenever you have symptoms of a urinary tract infection, or any other infections, including but not limited to diarrhoea and vomiting.
- Avoiding as much as possible self medication.
BAD HABBITS THAT DAMAGE OUR KIDNEYS
- EXCESSIVE CONSUMPTION OF ALCOHOL.
- CIGARETTE SMOKING.
- HOLDING IN OF URINE FOR TOO LONG.
- CONSUMPTION OF HARBAL CONCUCSSIONS.
- MULTIPLE SEXUAL PARTENERS AND ENGAGING IN UNPROTECTED SEX.
- POOR HYGIENE.
