I agree with you that people mistake what they are experiencing for something greater than it is. This is greatly because the state of satori that can be achieved when taking psychedelics is a divine state to experience, especially in comparison to the insanity that most people live.
Okay you might be laughing at the thought of having a satori like experience after taking some psychedlic drugs, but read on to hear me out. Remember that your ego, the way you view the world and all of your thought's aren't a reality. They are simply a product of your past experiences, and everyone's are different. People become so entrenched in their believes that they have lost the ability to see them for what they are, beliefs and not truth. Things like a bad self image, prejudices and negative thought patterns can stop you from enjoying life to the full and lead to depression. Constant chatter in your mind stifles creativity and takes you completely out of the moment, rather than living life in the instinctual manner we should be.
Psychedelics can be a great teacher for people, as they shatter their ego and make them question everything that they believe to be true. Now not everyone will have positive, life changing experiences, and the drug itself won't change you, it can just be a great teacher as the majority of people find it hard or impossible to come to these realisations by themselves.
Psychedelics are already being reintroduced into the healthcare system in many countries because of this reason. They are much more effective in a controlled environment with the correct dose, and the majority of deaths that do occur are due to the fact that dealers are selling cheaper research chemicals as psychedelics.
remember that these substances belong to the realm of "non-reality" as well so really, you can't prove the imaginable from the real unless you get other people around you to "confirm" what is real and what is not.
aka mass delusion.
