Living with rosacea

in health •  6 years ago

Some people have a reddish skin tone, as if it were a slight irritation. This skin condition has a name and treatment. I'll explain how to deal with it.

Having some areas of the skin noticeably red is the first sign that you may suffer from rosacea. But before panicking, it is necessary to know that it is not an illness with which you cannot live peacefully, because it does not affect the development of normal life, and requires only some care.

What is it?

Rosacea is a chronic disease that affects the skin -and sometimes the eyes as well. The physical manifestations of this condition are the redness of the epidermis, the appearance of pimples or blackheads and -already in more advanced stages- in the thickening of the skin. In most cases it only affects the area of the face.

How does it manifest itself?

This disease has many symptoms, including the following:

  • The most obvious is frequent redness of the facial skin, especially the forehead, cheeks, nose and chin.
  • The person may have mild burning and mild swelling of the skin.
  • Thin red lines are usually visible under the epidermis. These lines are due to enlarged subcutaneous blood vessels.
  • Occasionally, redness may be accompanied by the appearance of pimples.
  • The eyes and eyelids tend to swell.
  • The nose may swell. In some people, mainly men, it becomes larger red and with slight bumps.
  • The skin may become thicker and harder on the affected parts.
  • What caused it?

Science has not yet succeeded in finding the exact origin of the illness. Some specialists believe that it is caused by the extreme and too easy expansion of the blood vessels. It also handles the theory that presenting rosacea is something that comes from a genetic predisposition that gives it a hereditary character.

    What should be avoided?

Doctors generally agree that certain things can make rosacea worse, and it's best to avoid them. This list includes:

  • Intense heat (including hot water baths).
  • Very demanding exercises.
  • Direct sunlight.
  • Exposure to strong winds.
  • Very cold temperatures (including air conditioning).
  • Hot or spicy foods or drinks.
  • alcohol consumption.
  • Stress (tension).
  • Do cosmetics help?

There are divided opinions on this subject. However, there are those who believe in hypoallergenic products. In the case of makeup, the bases of a green dye help to hide the redness of the skin.

What else is there to do?

Protect and repair the protective barrier of the skin, is a fundamental step to improve the condition of rosacea, because any damage to this skin film increases sensitivity, aggravating the feeling of dryness, tightness and irritation, characteristics of rosacea. It is necessary to avoid:

  • Excessive face washing.
  • Use hot water.
  • Apply irritating products.
  • Aggressively exfoliating the face.
  • Do not protect yourself from environmental factors (sun, wind, temperature).
  • Eating a diet low in fatty acids.
  • Is there a cure?

So far there is no cure for rosacea, but the good news is that it can be treated and controlled. Under proper care, and over time, the skin may look better and less red, under the supervision of a dermatologist (the doctor who specializes in skin diseases).

    How can it be treated?

There are different treatments that have proven to be effective in reducing symptoms. Each and every one of them must be prescribed by a specialist. These treatments may include:

  • Application of antibiotic products directly on the skin.
  • Take antibiotics by mouth.
  • Application of gels for topical use, which can alleviate the redness of the skin.
  • Electrosurgery and laser surgery to treat small red lines.
  • For cases where the nose has been affected, some extra skin tissue can be removed, making the skin smaller.
  • What components to avoid?

Some components have already been identified that weaken the skin's natural protective barrier and make it more prone to rosacea symptoms if you suffer from it. Cosmetic labels are worth checking, not buying the ones they contain:

  • SULPHATES: Sodium lauryl ether sulphate (SLES), sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS) and ammonium lauryl sulphate (ASL).
  • ALCOHOLS: Denatured alcohol, SD alcohol, ethanol, isopropyl, or propanol. Perfumes and fragrances. Mechanical and chemical exfoliants, such as charcoal powder, grapefruit/toronja extract and Alfa hydroxy or AHA.
  • PARABENOS: The methylparaben, the ethylparaben, the propylparaben and the butylparaben.
  • Who gets it?

It is a disease that manifests itself primarily in:

  • Women (especially during the menopause phase).
  • Fair-skinned people.
  • Adults between 30 and 60 years old.
  • GOD BLESS YOU.
