To get a good sleep, position of sleeping matters a lot... As for most of us, we love to sleep on our stomach but its not safe... Let me take you to the history of incidents:
In Times Magazine, I don't remember the date and sorry for that, it was published for latest developments in Spinal Surgery... They were showing the latest medical hardware and how it dealt with the problem of slipped discs and crushed discs and all that... At the end of it, they mentioned a list of doctor's recommendations to avoid spinal problems: And number 1 was, "Don't sleep on your Stomach"...
They also gave the reason for this saying that the Spine is the heaviest bone structure and everything in front of it is soft organ like intestine, stomach etc and when you sleep on your stomach, the spine sag downwards... and this also contributes to the curvature as you see the people walking with their hump...
In 1981, an article was published in British Newspapers that Medical scientists are studying a particular illness especially in children which caused their death in crib... And this was named as the Crib Death or it is also known as Sudden Death Syndrome (SDS). It was hard to find the reason of death, however, they came to know it was because of the children sleeping on their stomach... Later, it was made Public announcement to parents as to avoid putting their children to sleep on their stomach...
If you Google the above statement, you'll come across to a number of websites pointing towards the bad effects of this... However, on Business Insider [1], you'll find out that when you sleep on your stomach — it creates rotation in your spine. Unless you rest with your head face down into the pillow, you’re probably turning your head to one side and that can put a lot of strain on your neck and cause misalignment problems, according to Dr. Lefkowitz. The writer also mentions the statements of the doctor, If you sleep 8 hours a night that’s a 1/3 of your day, so you’re spending a 1/3 of your life with your spine completely rotated, adding that it can cause severe back and neck pain.
On SleepAdvisor, they also mentioned with headings the reasons: [2]
