AN INTRODUCTION TO CHRONIC FATIGUE SYNDROME (Part I)
by Darcy K. Butcher | Pacific Rim International | 16 April 2018
Pain and loss of vitality are endemic in many countries. Fatigue, pain and chronic conditions hinder the ability to live a full, rich and rewarding life. One condition that many are diagnosed with and managing is that of Chronic Fatigue. This first article will give a brief introduction to CFS. Other articles will discuss treatment options so that individuals can design a healing path which may help them claim wholeness.
DEFINING CHRONIC FATIGUE SYNDROME #CFS
DID YOU KNOW?
The first known outbreak of chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) took place during 1934-1935 at the Los Angeles County Hospital and affected 198 doctors and nurses during a polio outbreak.
300 doctors and nurses at the Los Angeles County Hospital were given an early polio vaccine developed by Dr. Maurice Brodie, as well as approximately 7,000 children. (Active Immunization Against Poliomyeleitis, American Journal of Public Health, February 1936)
The vaccine was passaged multiple times through mouse brain tissue. (Attempts to Produce Poliomyelitis in Refractory Laboratory Animals, March 1, 1935, doi: 10.3181/00379727-32-7876)
In addition to the polio vaccine, the doctors and nurses were also given an accompanying "immune serum" to boost their response to the vaccine. This immune serum contained "merthiolate", otherwise known as thimerosal, as a preservative....
It was also during this time period that the first children who would go onto develop autism were born. These children were born to parents who worked primarily in the medical and scientific fields (1)
In 2009 Dr. Judy Mikovits published in the journal Science her finding of:
An association between a mouse retrovirus, XMRV, and patients with ME/CFS. This virus appears to be a mouse virus which has been adapted to human beings. This retrovirus was also found in a high number of children with autism.
CAUSES OF CFS
According to the CDC the causes of chronic fatigue have yet to identify a single cause. They assert that multiple causes because conditions that have been studied may lead to or determine what is classified as a "trigger" event. This trigger then is cause that develops into CFS. These include: Infections, immune disorders, stress, trauma, and/or toxins.
"Despite a vigorous search, scientist have not yet identified what causes CFS." (CDC)
CHRONIC STRESS CAN CONTRIBUTE TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF CFS
SOME OF WHICH ARE:
Adrenal Fatigue
Thyroid hyper-stimulation
Pancreatic overload
Hormonal Imbalances
Nutrient Deficient Diet
A Sedentary Lifesyle
Toxic environment
Toxic, processed Food
Antibiotics
Medications
SYMPTOMS OF CFS
TREATING CFS
The framework of treatment is based on the premise that the individual has "blown a fuse" which is rooted in the hypothalmus region of the brain.
THE FIVE ESSENTIAL AREAS OF TREATMENT ARE:
- RESTORATIVE SLEEP
- HORMONE BALANCE
- MANAGING INFECTION & INFLAMMATION
- OPTIMAL NUTRITION
- EXERCISE WITHIN RESTORATIVE ABILITY

Notes:
THIOMERSAL
"Morris Kharasch, a chemist at the University of Maryland, filed a patent application for thiomersal in 1927;[9] Eli Lilly later marketed the compound under the trade name Merthiolate. In vitro tests conducted by Lilly investigators H. M. Powell and W. A. Jamieson found that it was forty to fifty times as effective as phenol against Staphylococcus aureus. It was used to kill bacteria and prevent contamination in antiseptic ointments, creams, jellies, and sprays used by consumers and in hospitals, including nasal sprays, eye drops, contact lens solutions, immunoglobulins, and vaccines. Thiomersal was used as a preservative (bactericide) so that multidose vials of vaccines could be used instead of single-dose vials, which are more expensive. By 1938, Lilly's assistant director of research listed thiomersal as one of the five most important drugs ever developed by the company." (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thiomersal)
