Breastfeeding
When any baby is born, the baby is totally dependent on the food that we feed them. A new born infant drinks only milk from its mother. Whether it is a human baby or any type of animal, mother's milk is the best for any baby to drink. In humans, new born babies receive all the nutrients they need to survive by just drinking breast milk. A human baby receives the nutrients it needs to grow, and it also gives the infant natural immunity. From about 6 months on wards, babies are weaned off the breast and introduced to other foods. I truly believe that if a baby is fed normal food prior to the six month period, the baby will have digestive issues later in life.
After this time period, human babies are normally exposed to cow's milk. People often believe that a baby should be given milk from a cow after breastfeeding.
Did you know that we are the only species on earth that drinks milk from other animals?
Like all mammals, human infants produce great amounts of lactase. Lactase is an enzyme that allows the body to digest lactose. Later on in life, after the age of about five years, lactase production decreases.
Lactase is an enzyme produced by many organisms. It is located in the brush border of the small intestine of humans and other mammals.
Why do humans drink cow's milk?
About 7500 years ago in Central Europe, a genetic mutation appeared. The mutation caused people to produce lactase up to adulthood. According to a 2009 study in the journal PLOS Computational Biology. (The mutation is also believed to have evolved a few other times and places over the last several thousand years.)
Another theory suggests that farmers with their families moved out of Europe with domesticated crops, that weren't suited for the environment. Due to the lack of food resources and possible contaminated water sources, these farmers turned to cow's milk for nutrition and this became part of their daily diet. They thrived on the milk because they were able to digest lactose. They also passed it on to the next generation. Others, who did not have the mutated gene, eventually died because they could not digest lactose. This is possibly where lactose intolerance started.
What is the nutritional value of milk?
Milk contains quite a few nutrients. 200 ml of milk will give you your daily needed intake of calcium, potassium, phosphorus as well as vitamins B2 and B12. Even though milk holds all these properties, and may seem healthy, milk from a cow is not healthy for human consumption.
Did you know?
- Calcium from animal milk is not absorbed into our bodies easily. It could even cause serious health problems.
- Some people suggests that milk consumption can lead to an increased risk of prostate cancer.
- A single serving of milk can contain as much as 24 mg of cholesterol.
What we also need to remember is that earlier in previous centuries, milk was unpasteurized. Nowadays all milk is pasteurized and can be considered a processed food. Most of us know that anything processed is not totally natural. If milk is not processed it is possibly healthier to drink but nowadays milking cows are given antibiotics and is injected with a genetically engineered form of bovine growth hormone. This man made hormone is used to artificially increase the production of milk. Therefore milk can be seen as unnatural.
Despite the fact that people drink milk for a natural calcium intake, recent studies have shown that milk and other dairy products can actually create osteoporosis in your bones. Because it is so difficult to absorb calcium from cow's milk (especially when pasteurized) it actually increases calcium loss from the bones which increases the risk of fractures. When milk is ingested, it increases the acidity in our blood. To neutralize the acid, our bodies pulls calcium from our blood.
Conclusion:
Just remember too much of anything is bad for you! One glass of milk will probably not kill you but it may increase your risk to diseases later in your life.

Another really good post giantbear with lots of useful info and links. This is something I was aware of myself but didn't have anywhere near as much info so thanks a lot.

Well no, this is false. Milk is not particularly good or bad for you, dependent on your abilities to properly break down lactose. It's a food and fine in moderation much like most other foods.

I agree to some point. I think we will definitely survive the odd glass of milk here and there....thanks for your comment! :)

I prefer not to drink milk at all as I don't like the taste. Only small amount in my coffee once a day.

That's an interesting article. However, I am not a huge fan of these modern tendencies that always give me kind of a sensation that they are just driven by marketing. My whole family has consumed an Ocean of milk during their lives, and they had never any of the problems you mentioned. I by myself drink a lot of milk and consume other dairy products on a daily basis. A month ago I did my annual check-up at the hospital which includes a complete screening and blood analysis. My numbers were all excellent. Just from my single and non-relevant point of view I think there are products on the market that are much more complicated than milk :) If you practice a good portion of sports, fill your lungs with enough oxygen and don't spend too much time in front of the computer, then you can probably eat and drink whatever you want...But that's just my way of living.

My mother is the same. She can eat anything and not pick up any weight...me on the other hand just look at food and it's over. I agree with the fact that there are products out there that cause way more issues, and these days everything we touch is bad for you...lol!

Oh I also pick up weight quickly, but then I go out paddling for three hours and burn it all down :-D
You are absolutely right. Nowadays almost everything is known to increase a certain risk of cancer. If we listened to all these prayers, we would go crazy right away. I prefer to enjoy life and die when the day has come. Then I'll have enjoyed at least some delicious blueberry muffins ;))

Milk is bad for you, in fact dairy is! The only milk that is good for you is Colostrum.
Perhaps the worlds most functional food, Colostrum - Immune Milk - has been researched in over 4000 studies and proven to have powerful regenerative properties.

Oh definitely. I breastfed my one son up to ten months and the second son up to 13 months and they hardly get sick ever!!

I've grown up drinking milk - and now i still drink raw milk straight from the cow.
Other animals will drink milk if they can - because they instinctively know it is a good nutrition source.
Proper milk straight from the cow that has not had value added is easily digested and absorbed. Commercial milk is just the opposite.
I come from a family of dairy farmers who also grew up drinking milk. My mother has 10 brothers and sisters 8 of which are still alive and all are over 60. My mum is in her mid 70s and unstoppable!
I think the studies that say milk is bad for you are the same ones that say anything un-processed is bad for you. Water from the sky is bad for you - it must have chlorine in it to make it safe!
Yes - i drink plain artesian well water as well, with no value added stuff.
I don't knit my own sweaters from my armpit hair or anything, but I do pay attention to what I eat and drink. ;-)
Like today - I ate steak and chips and drank beer :-)

Well steak is a protein and chips is a vegetable and beer is made from hopps so technically you had a very balanced meal!

Breast milk is good for baby. It is absolutely right that cows are given antibiotics to increase the amounts of milk, which is not good for health.

Pretty interesting. I doubt I'd ever be able to stop drinking milk. I love it. It's better than drinking soda and a lot of other stuff out there. I think breast milk is a fascinating study. I'm breastfeeding my daughter right now and at times I get sick with flu or colds, she barely gets sick at all. I was reading mothers milk changes to include antibodies when the baby or she are sick to protect the baby.Pretty interesting. I'd say once they are weened whole milk still provides a lot of nutrients.

Hi there. Absolutely the best thing you can do for that precious baby. My son got his first tooth at ten months and boy...he literally bit a hole in my breast and then refused to take the breast after that. Most exhilirating and satisfying experiences to breastfeed a child.

Very informative post @giantbear. In India it's worst either. people drink buffalo milk. There is a saying there that buffalo milk make humans dumber. I think its true based on my personal experience.

Very interesting. I would add that the WHO recommends breastfeeding a child until at least 2 years of age, alongside introducing solids from aged 6 months of course. I have breastfed my children into toddlerhood. My second had a little formula supplement due to weight loss in the early days and does have minor allergies, which may or may not be linked to the supplement. I encourage my son to drink cows milk as he rejects water but perhaps I should be buying organic milk.
