The illusion is that we have rights. We believe this because we protect them through the government, police, and judiciary. Unfortunately, rights don't exist universally.
Their existence depends on consensus within the community of people who ascribe to a common set of beliefs. Rights are not absolute and they can be taken away by the same process which grants them: It's always "We", not "I" in human relations.

The same dynamic exists between countries as well as within one nation. Human interactions are defined by agreements among individuals and groups based on trust or fear of immediate loss - basically, our survival instinct kicks in when our self-interest is threatened.
Remember that Biden will veto Medicare For All legislation even after he claims he believes healthcare is a human right.

In this respect, self-interest is often at odds with collective interests in that a person or group must receive benefits disproportionate to their contribution to society for long enough to create positive feedback loops which destabilize society's very foundation.
