What is in our tap water?steemCreated with Sketch.

Maintaining good levels of hydration is well known to be critical to our health, unsurprising really as a huge proportion of the human body is made up of water.

About 18 months ago, as part my journey towards a more natural, organic diet, I gave up my usual fruit squash and fizzy drinks. I replaced them with just plain old tap water but was surprised by how difficult I was finding it to tolerate the taste. It was chemically, with almost a drying after taste in my mouth. I'd always thought that my water didn't really have a taste but clearly all this time I had just been 'masking' it with sugar and artificial flavours!

After a little research I decided that if I was going to continue my quest to drink only water I needed to improve it's quality somehow - I bought a water filter. Let me tell you, it was the best money I have ever spent.

It TRANSFORMED our water to the tasteless clear liquid that I actually expected to come from our tap.

With such a marked difference in taste, it did however make me question what was in our tap water to begin with. I came across this short video.

I was so shocked by it's claims that I tried a similar experiment with my own tap water vs filtered water.

I boiled down only 1 litre of each water to leave only about 20-30ml. The filtered water on the left resulted in a small amount of clear liquid. The tap water on the right had a pale yellow tinge to it.

Now I've not had this chemically tested nor do I claim to be any expert on water composition. I would imagine however that most people would rather drink the clear liquid than the yellow one - it's just common sense! Not to mention the difference in taste!!

It scares me to think what is actually considered 'safe' to be in our tap water.
In fact the quality of official advice on our health scares me in general.

One thing is for certain, if you don't look after your own health, nobody else will.

Take responsibility for your own health.

I don't drink tap water, especially in the United States. We have the highest percentage of fluoridated water and the most people on prescription drugs in the whole world. I know for a fact their are all types of prescription drugs that contaminate our water supply as well, thats why they tell people to not flush their drugs down the toilet. The people in charge of the water supply are definitely not to be trusted.

Wow really? That's scary stuff. At the moment our water isn't fluoridated. I would assume it's only a matter of time until it is though. Thanks for your comment!

Yes, unfortunately the corporations that make the waste product (fluoride) always seem to get their way! Just followed and resteemed! Peace!

Thank you!

Great post. I don't know if too many people are aware about what could be lurking in tap water. My final purchase to myself while I was pregnant and was still earning money was a water distiller. I'm so pleased I bought it. It makes me happy knowing that my family is having the best quality water we can have without any additional things in there that we are not aware of.

It's honestly something I had never even questioned before so I'm sure many others are the same. When friends see my water filter and ask about it they do sometimes think I'm crazy or paranoid! People just blindly trust what they're told is safe. If my filter doesn't remove whatever is in it then my body has to and that's far from ideal.

I only drink whiskey @katem, water is for plebs. Nah, not really. I drink tap water. Filtered though. Good post.

Thank you! Haha you're going to love Scotland then, more whiskey than water here!

Well, I actually don't drink much at all to be honest. I was being a smart arse! Haha. I don't mind a whiskey every now and then though. I want to do a tour of alone if the distillers when we're there. Not sure which. A good one though.

You never know what's is really in everything we consume! So sad 😭
