Destroy Cola-Cola teeth?

There are many legends and myths around the world's most famous drink, as we could see in Article 15 Curiosities About Coca-Cola , but one of the most famous is that Coca-Cola dissolves teeth. In fact, the legend goes a little further, it is said that if you dip a denture an entire night in a Coca-Cola glass the next morning only the irons will remain.

The truth is that this legend has a solid origin . In 1950 Professor Clive McCay explained in one of his lectures that the high levels of sugar and phosphoric acid, which contained Coca-Cola caused the dissolution of teeth. For more references, he said that if left for two days a tooth dipped in a glass of Coke would start to dissolve. Although this may be true (it has been attempted on other occasions without getting anything wrong) would not be a big problem. We usually drink Coca-Cola and we do not keep it in our mouth for two days in a row, but we swallow it instantly.

Is there any truth behind the myth?

On the other hand, it is proven that carbonated beverages can cause the progressive destruction of teeth if they are taken abundantly and consistently. Anyway, there are regular foods that are more acid than Coca-Cola and that, therefore, can be more harmful than this for our dentures. For example, orange. Some studies say that after eating oranges or drinking orange juice, the acidity can cause the enamel of our teeth to dissolve. It is advisable not to brush your teeth immediately and, if possible, first take dairy products to compensate for the acidity.

But there is nothing to worry about, since, like almost everything in life, if taken in moderation is not harmful. So, you can continue to enjoy a Coke from time to time.

Oh, wow, interesting. Didn't know that oranges/orange juice can be more harmful for the teeth than coke. But I guess, as you said, it's about the quantity. As long as you're moderating your consumption, you should be fine overall. Thanks for the insight. Was an interesting read. 🙂

thank you
