Have we been mislead into believing we should be eating a certain way to achieve optimal health, when in reality, it's harming our bodies and minds in myriad ways? From cancer to chronic conditions to organ failure and everything in between, there is no denying that, at least in America, our collective health is in dire straits. We see obesity and all of it's associated diseases at epidemic levels here in the States. Cancer treatment is $100 billion plus industry for it's drug treatments alone. The pharmaceutical industry, in the US alone, is worth half a trillion dollars. That is a staggering cost to maintain our health. Why are we so seemingly unhealthy as a population?
Let's start by examining the nutritional guidance and the so-called food pyramid and it's history in the US. While each iteration has varied slightly, there has always been a single, ramped up constant; Breads, cereals, pasta and various starchy consumables. Now, I think everyone understands that carbohydrates are the main fuel source for the body. However, should they be the dominant source of nutrition in our diet?
There is a lot of evidence that sugar, whether directly consumed as such or converted from carbohydrates, contributes and exacerbates a swath of medical conditions including cancer, diabetes and heart disease (3 of the biggest killers today). Why have we been told, consistently throughout modern history, that the majority of the calories we consume on a daily basis be sourced from something that science has found to be a big problem?
Conspiracies aside, it is pretty clear that either scientific evidence on dietary guidelines has been misconstrued, at best, or we've been purposely mislead on nutrition and daily dietary needs. Should we trust the people who extol the virtues of an obviously flawed approach to nutritional health? How can we change the way our diet is structured to achieve optimal health and immunity? What should the real makeup of the food pyramid be? What can we do to change the way people think about diet and nutrition?
