Cilantro is an herb that is related to parsley. Using cilantro to flavour food may also help to reduce your sodium intake. This article gives a short history of coriander, describes its nutritional content, and discusses possible health advantages.

There exists archaeological evidence that cilantro has been enjoyed for centuries. Cilantro contains compounds which help food stay fresher for longer. Cilantro is said to have anti-cancer effects and boosts the skin. One 4th of a cup of cilantro includes 5 percent of the daily value of vitamin A.

What is cilantro?
Coriander is an annual plant of the Apiaceae genus, which contains 3,700 species including celery, carrots, and parsley. All portions of the plant are edible, but the fresh leaves and the dry seeds are most often utilised in cooking.
Frequently referred to as coriander, cilantro comes from the plant Coriandrum sativum. In the US, the leaves of the plant are known as coriander, and the seeds are called coriander. Coriander is also widely known as Chinese parsley. Cilantro has been an integral part of the human kitchen for quite a long time. Dried traces of cilantro were found in a cave in Israel around 6,000 BC. Cilantro was also widely used in ancient Egypt, showing that its use was prevalent even in ancient civilisations.

Benefits
Consuming plant-based foods of all types is associated with reduced risk of many lifestyle-related health conditions. Some studies suggest that consuming more plant foods such as cilantro might decrease the potential risk of obesity, overall mortality, diabetes mellitus, and heart problems while promoting healthy skin and hair and providing energy.

Anticancer
Research suggests that some spices, including coriander, can prevent heterocyclic amines (HCA) formation in meats during cooking, as pointed out by an article in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. The National Cancer Institute identifies HCA as compounds which are formed when meat is cooked at a high temperature.
A high level of consumption of foods containing HCA is linked to a greater risk of cancer. Research published in the Journal of Food Science looked at the five Asian spices, including Coriandrum sativum, or coriander, when cooking meat. They also found an analgesic effect correlated with coriander extracts. They noted that naloxone, a drug that blocks the effects of opioids, inhibited the reduction in pain. This could mean that the coriander works through the opioid system.

Carotenoids
As anti-oxidants, dietary carotenoids can decrease the potential risk of many conditions, including multiple cancers and eye diseases. A study published in Plant Foods for Human Nutrition revealed that ginger and coriander contained the highest levels of the carotenoids beta-carotene and beta-cryptoxanthin, as well as lutein and zeaxanthin, which are all known for their anti-oxidant properties.

Skin
An article found in the Journal of Medicinal Foods in 2015 informs about the capacity of the coriander leaf, or coriander extracts to defend the skin against harm caused by ultraviolet B radiation. They analysed an alcohol suspension of coriander on both human skin cells in a dish, and skin cells in hairless laboratory mice. The results supported the possibility that C. Sativum prevents skin photoaging.

Antifungal properties
Even though there are a variety of treatments for fungal infections, such as oral candidiasis, they frequently cause unpleasant adverse effects. Coriander offers an alternative solution.
