Ang Department of Health (DOH) ng Pilipinas ay naglabas ng report na meron ng 149 na kaso na sa Pilipinas ang nag karoon ng JEV. Tinatayang nagkaroon ng 22 na kaso nito ay nagmula sa Pampanga simula noong Enero hanggang Agosto 2017.

Ano nga ba ang JEV? (What is Japanese Encephalitis Virus (JEV)?)
Ang JEV is a mosquito-borne flavivirus, and belongs to the same genus as dengue. JE primarily affects children.

Japanese Encephalitis Virus (JEV)

Signs and Symptoms
Most JEV infections are mild (fever and headache) or without apparent symptoms, but approximately 1 in 250 infections result in severe clinical illness. Severe disease is characterized by rapid onset of the following:

1. High fever,
2. Headache,
3. Neck Stiffness,
4. Disorientation,
5. Coma,
6. Seizures, and
7. Spastic Paralysis

The case-fatality rate can be as high as 30% among those with disease symptoms.
Of those who survive, 20%-30% suffer permanent intellectual, behavioural or neurological problems such as paralysis, recurrent seizures or the inability to speak.

Transmission

24 countries in the WHO South-East Asia and Western Pacific regions have JEV transmission risk, which includes more than 3 billion people. JEV is transmitted to human through bites from infected mosquitoes of the Culex species. Humans, once infected, do not develop sufficient viremia to infect feeding mosquitoes. The virus exists in a transmission cycle between mosquitoes, pigs and/or water birds. The disease is predominantly found in rural settings, where humans live in closer proximity to these hosts.

Diagnosis

To confirm JEV infection and to rule out other causes of encephalitis requires a laboratory testing of serum or, preferentially, cerebrospinal fluid.
