What's Your Routine When You Get Sick?

Over the last week or two I've been trying to get over being sick and was curious what you all do when you're feeling ill. In the United States, healthcare is a big issue right now and though we spend more than most, from what I've seen, the quality of care we get isn't that great. I could go on and on about how messed up the insurance system is or how the loss of price discovery, government regulatory capture, and revolving door politics has influenced these things, but I'll save that discussion for another time.

What I'm curious about is what your routine is when you get sick? Do you go to the doctor right away? Do you use home-remedies, prescription drugs, or over-the-counter meds?

(Side note: one of my favorite quotes about medicine comes from the comedian Tim Minchin's Storm the Animated Movie: "Do you know what they call 'alternative' medicine that works? Medicine.")

I'm not a big fan of going to the doctor for most common things, because it seems to me, often our own bodies do the healing eventually anyway. Last Sunday, I could tell my cough/sinus headache was only getting worse so I went to the walk-in clinic and got X-rays, blood work, mouth swabs, etc. They found a bacterial infection, but the lungs looked good, so it hadn't yet developed into anything worse like pneumonia or bronchitis.

I got some antibiotics, and I've been basically taking it easy all week. I worked less than 20 hours and have been resting as much as possible. My thinking is while my immune system is fighting something off, I should be taking it easy, drinking plenty of water, etc. The sinus headaches were making it difficult to code anyway.

So here I am, seven days later, having run the full antibiotics course, and I'm not sure if I'm really all that much better. I'm still coughing and the sinus headache still comes and goes. Does this thing just need to run its course? Should I just forget about resting and get back to "normal life" using pain killers, decongestants, and the like? I don't really know.

I'm curious what you do. Healthcare is becoming more and more personal as people can now research their own symptoms online and get to know themselves better than most anyone else. At the same time, there's a growing distrust of experts which may be leading to a net result of decreased wellbeing. True experts can bring real value with their experience, training, and education. The "appeal to authority" fallacy has quite a few caveats as Wikipedia describes it also as an "argument from unqualified authority".

There's also the wisdom of the crowd to consider. Maybe that's what this post is about. I'm curious what you think and do.

Colloidal silver is good stuff, and it will certainly help, but that alone probably won't reverse a bad infection.

The American media do their best to make out it's "dangerous" with fake stories of blue people, so that does indicate it could be really helpful

I've had my doubts about it, but I'll do some more reading. This seems like a good place to start. Up front, it mentions the FDA concerns.

Welcome to the future of health. You will see this type of language become more mainstream in the next few years as people wake up to the truth.

I've heard some of this before and it is quite interesting, for sure. How does one measure their frequency or vibration?

It has been measured and studies were done in the early 2000's by a guy (name escapes me). In the future I am sure we will all have access to vibrational devices similar to FitBits etc on our wrists which will tell us our vibrational state and also whether we are in healthy energy fields (EMF). Electromagnetic Fields are also disrupting our biosphere and causing sickness (Power lines, power fields in our homes, microwaves, computers and wifi). What we can't see is hurting us the most.

If you can provide links to verifiable, evidence-backed sources, I'd be interested to look into it further.

Honestly, I'm quite skeptical of homeopathic remedies based on what I've looked into. At the same time, I think the placebo effect is real and powerful and I often wonder if many of these remedies work simply because we believe they do and we get our body acting in accordance with our mental state.

There are certainly some duds out there. Based on what Wim Hof is teaching us, I am intrigued how much healing is what we take in, and what we shape our mental state to be - placebo effect as you say.

I've been wondering about the Wim Hof stuff also as it seems to weaken my immune system even more than normal. Maybe I'm not doing it right or I just need to do it more consistently. I stop doing it when I get sick, but maybe I shouldn't?

That is odd. I have not heard of negative effects such as yours from Wim's methods.

When I first started looking into it, I was reading stuff on Reddit, in forums, and asking some friends here locally who do it, and I found it does happen to others as well. I wonder if it impacts different people in different ways.

Yeah, that's my usual approach as well, but since we have a vacation on the beach coming up, I was hoping to just knock this thing out quickly.

I pretty much do exactly what you described. And only go to the doctor if i really need to. Being Canadian, I'm not worried about the cost -- more that I don't want to waste my time or anyone else's. I also avoid the emergency room at (almost) all cost. I know people who seemingly have their kids in emergency for one thing or another every few weeks. It drives me nuts to hear them complain about our healthcare system when they routinely use emergency services for small things like fevers, colds and scrapes.

Yes, thanks for the reminder. We have a plastic bottle thingy we use with the salts that is just like a neti pot. This one has been mostly in my chest, but I should still be clearing out the sinuses as well, which I haven't been doing this week.

So sorry you're not well --I deal with these issues frequently myself. Personally, I found colloidal silver too strong for me...or maybe it created some kind of reaction to toxins dying off -- in any case, it made me sicker. However, I am a huge fan of the lyposomal vitamin C! This stuff is amazing! I would suggest 1 to 3 packets a day, depending on how severe your infection might be ("Lypo-Spheric Vitamin C" www.LivOnLabs.com). If your doctor hasn't cultured your infection to identify the pathogen, you can't be certain that it is bacterial--rather than viral. If it's viral, the lyposomic Vit C will also be effective. What I usually do when I'm in your situation is: Lypo-Spheric Vit C, Vit D3 with K2, zinc picolinate, elderberry syrup, and rest (heavy on the rest). Thanks Claire. In this case, they did confirm the specific bacteria and tailored the antibiotic accordingly. Do you happen to know if there's been any peer-reviewed research studies on the effect of vitamin C? I see a lot of people recommended it here.

I became interested in the liposomal vit C after watching a Youtube titled "liposomal vitamin c 60 minutes". Taking regular vit C isn't absorbed as well in high doses. Some doctors use IV vit C therapy -- but the liposomal form is absorbed well enough. As far as studies go, high dose vit C for therapeutic purposes is usually considered "alternative". I've found in a lot of situations most ailments I face are either addressed by using trigger point therapy (skeletal-muscular ailments) or acupressure (organ/disease ailments) prior to making my way to the doctor. As traditional Chinese medicine approaches the body as an interconnected system, usually something getting out of whack can manifest in unexpected ways. I'll usually do a quick search for "TCM ~insert condition~” and find some easy points I can press throughout the day as I research further. It's free, easy, and feels good once you find the right point. Additionally the descriptors used for conditions are relatable and usually make sense when put together to summarize conditions and the underlying causes. Whatever gets you there I hope you feel better soon!

Thank you for your response! I have friends who swear by these methods as well. It's tricky to know what really works, especially in an environment driven by pharmaceutical and insurance company profits. I wish more research went into whole-body wellness instead of just treating symptoms.

First I would say have a look at your diet and ask why are you getting sick because people just don't 'get sick'.

I would highly recommend to cut out meats, fish any kind of processed food. You will see unbelievable changes in your health and digestive system and this alone will probably contribute greatly to you not getting sick in the first place!

Taking antibiotics is dangerous. It kills the good bacteria, too. When you don't have good bacteria, the bad ones might become more powerful. Then it comes harder to get better if you get sick.

IMHO most people don't know pretty much anything about health issues, including doctors and other professionals. That's why the best way is to choose biohacking and try for yourself to find out what actually works.

I understand it kills the good and the bad, but we also eat a lot of probiotics around here including home-made pickles and water kefir. @corinnestokes keeps me fed with a lot of healthy real food. I also recognize there's a difference between getting bronchitis/pneumonia and not getting it, so sometimes the risk is worth it. I'm going on vacation in a week or so and really don't want to be sick for that, so I figured I'd take the risk in this case in hopes of wiping it out before it got worse.

I have some friends who are doctors and though I agree the amount we know is probably much less than the amount we don't know, but I wouldn't go so far as to say they don't know anything or that all of what they know is wrong. Not very often, at least. If I have a cold or fever, just resting for a couple of days is enough. Maybe a little bit extra vitamin D3 and zinc.

Your assessment of the state of the healthcare industry is accurate! Insurance premiums are outrageous and doctors reimbursements are continually declining.

I think too often doctors prescribe a medication when the natural body can fight off the infection. The bacteria and viruses seem to only be getting stronger and more resistant to the antibiotics/antiviral medications.

There have been a few new technologies that have come out recently that a simple blood test can say which medications work best with your body. That way the physician can prescribe the most effective medication for your illness while not having to try a different one to see if it will work.

Thank you! Yeah, I've been worried about the "super bug" issue with the decreasing effectiveness of antibiotics. I was encouraged when the blood test showed bacteria it was and the doctor picked one specific antibiotic over another based on it's effectiveness in my area for that bacteria. Unfortunately, I'm still coughing here and there, so we'll see how effective it ultimately ends up being. If it wasn't the right thing to knock it out, and it spreads from me to someone else, will they get a muted, antibiotic immune version? Or maybe that's what I got to begin with? These are interesting questions and I feel like we're mostly still stumbling around in the dark when it comes to medical knowledge, but we're way further along than we once were. I get excited listening to people like Ray Kurzweil talk about nano-technology and medicine. That could get really interesting.

I rest up with Emergen-C, Zinc, water, and lots of interesting documentaries. I find that by not pushing it I can lower the downtime by half almost on most illnesses.

I agree that the body tends to heal itself. I can hardly go to the doctor for anything. Believing in health rather than sickness and having faith in the body's ability to heal has a sort of 'placebo' effect as well.

Not much you can do other than rest and get lots of vitamins. I always indulge in Gatorade, "arctic blast" flavor in particular, when I'm really sick.

The real interesting development in medicine recently IMO is improved blood tests - I think the traditional use of blood tests (once in a blue moon when something is wrong) is crazy, it's a huge opportunity to fine-tune one's health by getting high quality blood tests a few times a year.

That's a great point about blood tests. I've been seeing some interesting stuff about measuring all kinds of things to know exactly where you're body is at and what types of foods you can increase to get things just as they should be.

I'm also on my own figuring out to care for myself without doctors -- because my insurance premiums went up to $950 per month (1 person). Even if I could afford to pay that, I couldn't afford the deductible afterward. I saw someone suggest fresh ginger tea -- and I would agree. When my daughter gets sick like this, I giver her ginger tea -- along with the lyposomic vit C (LypoSpheric Vitamin C), D3 & K2, zinc, elderberry syrup, and rest!

I always drink plenty of water like you said and keep my body temperature regulated. I only take pills if they are necessarily but I mostly drink this Chinese medicine sort of thing once in the morning and before I sleep. I do think it's good to take a break from doing work as stress can sometimes be a factor in making you ill.

Depends on the illness but I think it does. Of course you get the whole is this a placebo effect kind of worry but it certainly isn't doing any harm

Get good sleep, drink a lot of water, do yoga, go out sometime for fresh air.

I am allergic to going to the doctor. Getting good rest seems to be the best cure for most common things. I think getting sick is often our bodies way of telling us we need to slow down and get more rest.

I usually try to drink a lot of water, get sleep, drink ginger tea that I make from cut up ginger, maybe have some turmeric, and that usually seems to work out for me! I also don't eat meat or dairy.

Without repeating some of the ideas already mentioned, garlic is a proven natural antibiotic. Ideally chop the cloves, then mash them fully crushed, wait about 10 minutes for the allicin to form and swallow. It's best in the morning before breakfast. You can add a touch of honey to help it go down.

And one other thing about the prescription antibiotics ... don't overlook the detailed warning that says take with a glass of water and avoid laying down for some period of time, ideally an hour. You want them down into your stomach good, else some of them can really burn up your esophagus.

Funny you should mention that warning. I read it last week (it said don't lay down for at least 30 minutes) and use a full glass of water (along with some food), and I wasn't sure why. Seemed quite odd to me. I'm glad I'm done taking them.
