Is a type of drugs named ergot alkaloids (ER-got AL-ka-loids). It works by narrowing the blood vessels around the brain.
It is used medicinally for treatment of acute migraine attacks (sometimes in combination with caffeine).
The fungus Claviceps purpurea and other clavicipitaleans form ergot sclerotia to
make their spores in oat, rye, wheat, and other grasses.
Ergot, in 1900, was a chemical mess. Henry Wellcome, the pharmaceutical manufacturer, invited Henry Hallett Dale, a physiologist, to join his research department and solve this problem.

The main effect of ergotamine is to constrict blood vessels
Many of these
are highly toxic due to their vasoconstrictive properties leading to gangrenous loss
