What foods should be taken or avoided by hypothyroidism patients?

Hypothyroidism can’t be cured with medicine though, it can be controlled with a better diet plan. While making diet plan, you need to know which foods can control the condition. All foods are not suitable for hypothyroidism. Some foods can aggravate the condition.

Hypothyroidism is also known as underactive thyroid which can reduce metabolism process. Once metabolism gets slow down, your weight may increase and you may also feel exhausted. So you not only should take medicine, but also follow a diet plan which is suitable for hypothyroidism. You must consult a doctor to know which foods you should take to control the condition. And not only that, you must know from them the foods that you would have to avoid. 

Hypothyroidism occurs when the body does not produce enough thyroid hormones. Often, doctors treat hypothyroidism with medicine that replaces the thyroid hormones.

While diet cannot cure hypothyroidism, it plays three main roles in managing the condition:

  • Foods that contain certain nutrients can help maintain proper thyroid function, such as iodine, selenium, and zinc.
  • Other foods interfere with normal thyroid function, such as those containing goitrogens and soy, so limiting these can improve symptoms.
  • Some foods and supplements can interfere with how well the body absorbs thyroid replacement medicine, so limiting these foods can also help.
