RATS DOUBLED THEIR LIFESPANS, CAN YOU? ...... BASIC INFORMATION ON CARBON 60, C-60, FULLERENE,BUCKYBALLS

in health •  7 years ago  (edited)

Recently I read some very interesting literature on a highly unusual form of carbon, C-60. I have been on a quest to find out as much as I can. The research is not well publicized. Information is rather limited. It is.very possible that findings have led to special interests and research maybe happening in fields outside of public access or query.

Here is what I know so far:
CARBON 60
The possibility of a carbon molecule existing in this form was mentioned and then predicted in 1965-1970. The molecule may exist in a sphere form, elliptical, tubular or many other forms but the common theme seems to be that it exists as a closed structure.

Usual carbon molecule with bonds to other compounds.

Robert Curl and Richard Smalley from Rice University, discovered C60. In 1996 along with Kroto they were awarded the Nobel prize in chemistry.
It was after the hypothesis and final discovery of C-60 molecules ( also known as FULLERENES) in the labs that they were found to exist in nature.
In 1992, fullerenes were found in a family of minerals known as Shungites in Karelia, Russia. To this day, Karelia remains the most abundant natural source of C-60 for public purchase. They come to you in the form of powdered rocks or rocks. These are known as SHUNGITE

Somehow somewhere research on health benefits of C60 started. There is a very famous study on mice published in 2011 and other studies published thereafter. Next pic is a snapshot of one of these studies.

There was then great interest on mechanisms of the anti aging and protective effects of C 60. Here is one research:

This post mentions the following:
“Novel mechanism of antioxidant activity of buckminsterfullerene C60 based on protons absorbing and mild uncoupling of mitochondrial respiration and phosphorylation was postulated. In the present study we confirm this hypothesis using computer modeling based on Density Functional Theory. Fullerene’s geroprotective activity is sufficiently higher than those of the most powerful reactive oxygen species scavengers. We propose here that C60 has an ability to acquire positive charge by absorbing inside several protons and this complex could penetrate into mitochondria. Such a process allows for mild uncoupling of respiration and phosphorylation. This, in turn, leads to the decrease in ROS production.”

These and other studies have led to companies selling FULLERENES, mainly in olive oil.
It would be great if we could prolong our life spans by simple consumption of C60.

BUT WAIT

Not all looks great. There are theoretical studies suggesting great harm to DNA.
A human population based study is unlikely to come by ( due to theoretical damage)except perhaps in the terminally ill. There will likely remain great uncertainty to the risk/benefit ratio.

There are some great posts on the subject at the following website. For those interested in Fullerenes, I am suggesting that the reader make a personal and informed decision.

You must know the risk of harm before you do it.
As far as I am concerned, I am disclosing my persuasions. Instead I thought you might enjoy a random picture from my kitchen counter.

Bucky Balls are a strange phenomenon, but I never knew about these recently discovered applications.

And I'm having a chuckle at the name "Buckminster-Fullerene". I wonder if it got it's name for being shaped similar to some of the designs he had produced during his lifetime. Thanks for sharing this. Now, I must research some more.

From Wiki
The discoverers of the Buckminsterfullerene (C60) allotrope of carbon named it after Richard Buckminster Fuller, a noted architectural modeler who popularized the geodesic dome. Since buckminsterfullerenes have a similar shape to those of such domes, they thought the name appropriate

lol, cool! Thanks for the reply. I was just going to edit my comment to ask, what are the "potential dangers" of Shungite? I can't seem to find anything warning me of risks. And if its from the FDA, I'll just disregard it, lol.

If you go to the blog site I listed, they mention studies in regards to potential harm. All theoretical btw. If you have trouble finding it let me know and I will copy and paste it for you

Interesting article!!
btw, I am aware the picture you are describing with "Usual carbon molecule" is actually composed with more than carbon atom alone. At the same time, one of the center atom form 6 bonds and it is impossible to be a carbon atom. This is likely to be an organometallic compounds.

I looked at it again and you are right. I had pulled the image from google. Should have paid attention. Thanks for pointing it out. It should be a simpler molecule. Still time to fix it. Thanks again.

Can't change pic , so I added a few words. Thanks again.

No worry :D

Finally, forever young!

Or twice as old as you were supposed to be.

Thanks for sharing ,

Following you now. A bit confused! Are you Sarah from the videos blog? Or are you Mary ?

The study by the University of Paris on rats, was to determine what the lethal dose of C60 was. They discovered that high doses of C60 in olive oil is not lethal. Instead C60 prevented tumors and prolonged the life of the rats.

You mentioned theoretical studies mentioning C60 causes harm to DNA. The only reference I have seen is that carbon nanotubes can be harmful to DNA and cells because they are small and sharp. During the production process of C60, nanotubes and other forms of carbon are produced. These impurities have to be removed until only 99.99% pure C60 remains. That is one of the reasons that C60 is so expensive to produce.

That variation of C12H18 is not really possible. I mean the carbon at the apex of the pentagonal pyramid has 6 bonds going to it but carbon as everyone knows will only allow four. Shungite’s cool right, nut doing that’s unlikely to make much difference because the C60 is only in it in a tiny percentage and it’s tied up with the other parts of the rock but even if the exposed part could dissolve C60 doesn’t really dissolve in water much.
