Diabete success story of Ric Lost 73 Pounds and Significantly Lowered His A1C as a Result of His Diabetes Treatment

When did you realize you needed to change your lifestyle?

I began experiencing type 2 diabetes symptoms about a year ago, and I realized it was time to see a doctor. I was 288 pounds when I called to arrange an appointment, and I knew the doctor would yell at me for it, so I dropped 10 pounds before calling to make an appointment. "Well, you don't have pre-diabetes — you skipped that and have full-blown diabetes," my doctor said after reviewing the results of my bloodwork. The A1C level in my blood was 7.9%. That was a huge wake-up call for me, and I realized it was time to change.

What prompted you to begin?

I'd attempted dieting before and failed miserably. I needed to try something new, so I looked into the Ceracare Diabetes Prevention Program. To be honest, knowing I'd have to be weighed in front of a group was a little scary, and I was worried about who would be in attendance. I assumed the staff was tiny and wouldn't understand what I was going through, but after the first meeting, I learned I wasn't alone; the other members of the group were going through the same thing. For me, this was critical.

When you're pressed for time, what's your go-to meal?

When I'm really busy, I have a few snacks to keep me going. Wheat Chex cereal with skim milk, a part-skim cheese stick, a healthy smoothie, or fat-free yogurt are my go-to foods.

What is your favorite rehabilitated version of an old (and maybe unhealthy) favorite food?

I don't have one. I've got some new recipes! I never thought I'd appreciate this manner of eating, but I do! For Thanksgiving, for example, we prepared a roasted Moroccan turkey breast with root vegetables, which was fantastic. It took some time for me to get past the sensation of "I can't give up that," but once I did, the benefits were fantastic!

I modify my day a little if I truly want to eat an old favorite. I eat a lesser piece of the meal and exercise to keep on track for the rest of the day.

What trick do you use to get back into the groove when you're frustrated or feel like you've lost your way?

I used to eat to get rid of my annoyances. I now take a stroll or ride my bike to get some exercise. I no longer use food as a coping mechanism for my feelings.

How do you go about planning your regular meals?

Yogurt, whole-wheat bread, and coffee for breakfast
Cheese stick, smoothie, or fruit for a mid-morning snack
Lunch: A lean burger (instead of three) or a thin-crust tuna sandwich — portion management is crucial!
Snack for the afternoon: a bag of popcorn with 100 calories. This is a far healthier alternative for me than the buttered popcorn I used to eat by the gallon.
Dinner consists primarily of chicken and turkey, with steak being served only on rare occasions. We prefer pork loin over fattier chops when we eat it. To control portion sizes, we eat on small plates.

This is no longer available as a dessert option. Every night, I would have ice cream. I buy one of the small single-serving containers if I truly want ice cream right now. Then it's gone.
Popcorn or fruit as a late-night snack I eat foods that don't have the same amount of fat, calories, or added sugar as the foods I used to eat, such as pie or cake.

What has been the most rewarding aspect of the adjustments you've implemented?

My A1C is quite high. I was able to reduce it from 7.9 to 5.6, which is a significant improvement! In the past, I had to request a seat belt extension when flying on airlines. When I asked for one the last time I travelled, the flight attendant remarked, "Oh, you won't need one of those." "I know, I'd like to take a picture with it to remember this time," I explained.

Do you have any suggestions for someone who has recently received a diabetes diagnosis?

It isn't the end of the world, so don't get too worked up. You can handle it and you don't have to give up everything you believe you should. Changes can be made to help you control your blood sugar, lose weight, or even return your numbers to normal. It's doable, especially if you're surrounded by individuals who believe in you. It's a lot less difficult now.
