Health Benefits of Pomegranate Juice

Recently I posted a smoothie recipe containing pomegranate seeds. I mentioned I have been researching some of the health benefits so I thought I would share a condensed version of what I’ve found…

1. Antioxidants:
Pomegranate juice contains higher levels of antioxidants than most other fruit juices, even three times the amount in green tea. The antioxidants in pomegranate juice can help protect cells and reduce inflammation. The antioxidants in the juice are also being studied for their effects on Alzheimer’s Disease.

2. Arthritis:
Flavonols in the juice may help block the inflammation that contributes to osteoarthritis and cartilage damage.

3. Vitamin C:
The juice of a single pomegranate has more than 40 percent of your daily requirement of vitamin C. However vitamin C can be broken down when pasteurized, so drink homemade or fresh pomegranate juice.

4. Other Nutrients:
In addition to loads of vitamin C, pomegranates are also full of vitamin K, potassium and fiber.

5. Digestion:
Pomegranate juice can reduces inflammation in the stomach and improves digestion.

6. Heart Health:
Small studies have shown that the juice improves blood flow and keeps the arteries from becoming stiff and thick. It may also slow the growth of plaque and buildup of cholesterol in the arteries.

7. Managing Anemia:
Pomegranates supply iron to the blood, thus helping to reduce symptoms of anemia.

8. Cancer:
Pomegranates have even been shown to provide anti-carcinogenic effects. The juice can help prevent and treat certain forms like prostate and breast cancer.
