US Healthcare System

in health •  6 years ago

What people usually refer to as our healthcare system, I tend to think of as our disease care system. It seems to have a lot more to do with selling pharmaceuticals, than with improving people's health. Some of the larger health insurance companies are ramping up the push for healthier diets and lifestyles, as they realize this will improve their bottom line.

Years ago health insurance was for catastrophic circumstances. You would pay and then submit the bill for reimbursement. People didn't like this because they had to have cash up front. The insurance industry came up with the health care insurance which covered the general things now that catastrophic didn't. Doctor's visits for colds etc previously were not covered.

Then a new system (with the "for just a bit higher premium" sales jargon bs) - a copay system could be purchased that removed the need to pay the doctor. The premium is much higher but the convenience! No more having to pay up front! Everyone immediately signed up and this became the norm and the industry switched to this. Now the insurance industry has it's fingers on every medical transaction, not just catastrophic.

Today this health prevention kick being preached more and more in the industry. This is their system to increase profit and reduce payouts. Keeping you healthy is how they never pay but you keep paying them. Along with regulation and law with government intervention the people can be forced into a healthy lifestyle making life more profitable.

I was watching the debates the other day and the one lady who is an author had a good point about it not being a healthcare system, but a sick care system. It was really interesting the comments she was making about getting to the root cause of why we are so sick as opposed to just treating us after the fact. Many times at the benefit of the insurance companies. Having been through a cancer diagnosis and treatment, I can say with certainty that insurance companies don't go out of their way to help you through this difficult time in your life.

I'm so sorry you had to deal with this. I hope you came out of it ok!

Thanks! They removed it and I seem to be okay. I still have three or four more years before I am certified cancer free.

I've experienced having lived and worked in the U.S. and being a Canadian citizen I have experienced both universal healthcare and pay for insurance systems. I couldn't believe how much it cost on a regular basis in the U.S. Insurance premiums, co-pay, then a deductible on top of that. It's crazy. I know that I'm paying for healthcare through my tax dollars in Canada but personally I love the system. I personally have no problem with my tax dollars going towards things like healthcare and education. I know that not everyone agrees with it but personally, I see it as a good use of tax dollars. Insurance companies are bullshit. They just keep finding new ways of sucking peoples savings dry - as you pointed out.

i'm not going to look for it but it is out there: There is a direct correlation between the insurance companies and especially government getting involved in US healthcare that has directly lead to the absurd price hikes over the years. Competition on price doesn't exist anymore and is actually discouraged.

I live in a country where if you have no insurance, you still aren't going to break the bank if something bad happens to you because there are so many hospitals all serving at different price points. If you have insurance like mine, it covers only big things (I have to be admitted for it to pay) but this only covers big things. I pay less than $500 a YEAR for this and everyone makes money in the process too.

The elimination of competition leads to the the inevitable price fixing and upward trajectory or overall costs. Politicians who are meant to "control" this are bought off and the lies and coverups to the public ensue.

I read an article recently where an MRI costs something like 2000 dollars in the states. The same procedure here in Thailand using the same machines with the same level of expertise costs just over $100.... how is this possible?

We are def planning a trip to Thailand one of these days to get some medical work done!
