Addiction is no laughing matter and a silent but "mental killer" is one that is often not discussed. As virtual connections are at the palm of our hands in the form of mobile computers it can be easy to fall into the trap of losing real world connections in the form of human interaction. I bring this topic up because it seems that society is moving backwards in many areas but most noticeable in reading, writing, communication skills, and the ability to form lasting relationships. If you have spent any time having direct reports in a business organization you understand a majority of the millennial generation can be "unique" in regards to the way they express themselves. But it is not only the millennial generation that may be forming an unhealthy addiction to the internet. Older generations may be just as prone as they are realizing that they can quickly form "friendships" with virtual strangers.
If you are experiencing any of the below symptoms @rawdawg would suggest you seek an internet abstinence for a while and find some real world interaction. Don't worry you wont melt. .
You prefer to read Steem, Twitter, Facebook, Reddit posts etc. as opposed to a book
You experience delusions of grandeur regarding your ability to change people, places, things, and political agendas. (Typically others notice this characteristic in you first)
Your only followers/connections are on social media
You claim that you are going to quit or cancel your social media account however you find yourself logging in anyhow
You lose time at work, school, or with family due to your addiction with "friends" on social media
You make excuses for yourself with statements such as, " I don't play well with others, so I spend all my time on social media/Steem." (Try seeing a human doctor to find out why you have a social disorder)
Others on social media get you angry to the point of spamming their accounts with links in the comment section
You think your "cause" is so important that there are state backed spies following you to spoil your plans just because there are some who don't agree with everything you say
Your outlook on life, society, people is overly negative and you have an obsession with conspiracy(See a doctor as you may be borderline schizophrenic)
You can't remember the last time you went on a date, gone out for dinner, or had sex
You think having any of the above conditions is acceptable
So this is @rawdawg 's list and it is obviously not comprehensive as there could be many other signs of an unhealthy addiction to your social media accounts.
Do yourself a favor and get a life. If you think living is being glued to a computer, tablet, or mobile phone then give me a call sometime and we'll go grab a beer. I assure you our real world adventure will be more exciting than your virtual world any day of the week.
well said. Here is a Poem From the Addiction File LOL Thanks.
Here I sit in the dead of night
Blogging on steemit is my delight.
If only I had the brains to sleep,
but I'm hooked on feeds and way in deep.
I sit and write and think and post.
Tomorrow morning my ass is toast.
So I shall force myself to bed,
and dream of posting in my head.

It's pretty bad when we can't go to the bathroom or to bed, without scrolling through our feeds... for fear of missing out on what exactly?
Thanks, for this, @rawdawg it's tricky finding the right balance between world connectedness (news, money, social media) and inner peace...

"You prefer to read Steem, Twitter, Facebook, Reddit posts etc. as opposed to a book"
Yeah, I am going to have to disagree with that. Consuming media is consuming media. It's like saying that reading a book about sex jokes is "better" than reading a @steemstem article. It's not. Media consumption shouldn't be about the channel, but rather the content. Besides, there are some really good serialized books on steemit. I'd read some of them even if I left the platform. Just wouldn't be able to vote.
Also, you would not believe how much I've discovered through r/todayilearned .

ABSOLUTELY CORRECT @techslut,,,, people make this "Logical Fallacy" error all the time. One can NOT consider "SOURCE" in a logical argument,,, only the validity of the premises and the soundness of the logic used..... People like to give this argument all the time saying anything from the web can not be trusted,,, but if its in a book or a newspaper its somehow more accurate..... pure POPPYCOCK !
Appeal to Authority

These links are not to prove a point, but rather for you guys to have an open mind about the topic. If you believe in your heart that reading on the internet is better for you than actual books, you are certainly entitled to your opinion as is everyone in this world.

for me videos are better,,, I get more content quicker than reading,,, I like reading if i'm diving into technical stuff so that there is plenty of time to reflect and go over things,,, possibly again and again. I find many books overly verbose,,,, like I feel I could cut their word usage to 1/5th and still get all the meaning across.... but to each his own..... I basically only read books for technical learning. I never read for "pleasure",,, not my cup of tea.

As someone who's written for both online and printed news publications, allow me to say pfffft. And you may quote me.
You can't trust shit, my friend. Everything is biased. Books, news online, news on TV and in papers and user content online. I take everything with a pinch of salt since I worked in media for 5 years. Also, took me another 5 to regain some faith in mankind.

I would have to agree,,,, everything needs to be looked at critically,,, just because it was written in a book does not necessarily mean it was more thought out or communicates more... A good writer can get more across in a short story than a crappy writer can do in a novel.
Although @kevinwong has a point if your just talking about HEADLINES.

I think the point made is that a book symbolises something more well-thought out instead of the more simplified, context-compressed stuff that misses out on details common in social media channels. The fact this post isn’t written in a “book” like form and getting such a reaction demonstrates that.

yup you're right, there's just more inclination to take large bodies of work that takes time to produce more seriously (or wholesomely) than tweets is all i'm saying. too much assumptions on both parts with context deprived material (which is short form). It's more like an art and skill these days though to be able to pack enough information for quick digest

Funnily I got sucked into my first online community here last year and found this place to be pretty damn interesting overall. Where the raw dawg at? Don’t mind a beer or two if we’re near lol
Edit: I wonder where you got inspired by your “diagnosis”. I did some research on cyber identities before back in early 2000s and never considered addiction before, just more on the exploratory, experimental side of pseudoanonymity

This is my first online community as well. Wasn't a social media person until Steem. . .
Was inspired by this community to write the "diagnosis" and also by some things Sean Parker had to say about Facebook.
Here are some of his comments:
With each like and comment, Facebook is “exploiting” human psychology on purpose to keep users hooked on a “social-validation feedback loop,” Parker said, adding that it is “exactly the kind of thing that a hacker like myself would come up with.”
When helping Facebook get off the ground in 2004, Parker said, he and others involved in the nascent social network thought: “How do we consume as much of your time and conscious attention as possible?”
“And that means that we need to sort of give you a little dopamine hit every once in a while, because someone liked or commented on a photo or a post or whatever. And that's going to get you to contribute more content, and that's going to get you . . . more likes and comments.”

There definitely is a generational disconnect that separates us millennials from other generations. All of the points made in the article were spot on. Sometimes it's best to unplug from technology and plug-in to reality.
