So much hype permeates the market that it can be hard to tell truth from fiction, but here are five superfoods that are the real deal.
- Garlic: everyones Grandma, hippy or health charged friends has told them of the benefits of garlic, but it is one of the closest things to a panacea that exists. One of the main ingredients in garlic, Allicin, has been shown to fight infection, improving immunity and general cardiovascular health. It can also reduce blood pressure and support glutathione activity (which is one of the most powerful antioxidants in the body). Substances in garlic can even support healthier cholesterol levels. You may, or may not like the taste, but you should seriously consider including more of this superfood in your diet!
- Spirulina: Algae... not everyones favorite word. This blue-green algae is another miracle worker. It performs as well as allegory medications for nasal allegory suffers, improves immunity on a number of parameters, has a complete protein content that accounts for 50-70% of its weight, and is packed with vital vitamins and minerals. Spirulina, like garlic, can improve cholesterol parameters, reducing bad cholesterol (LDL) levels quite remarkably, while increasing good cholesterol (HDL). Even NASA has this at the top of their list, so check it out.
- Cruciferous Vegetables & Green Leaves: The bane of childhood, eating your vegetables! Yet, if you want a healthy digestive system, better blood pressure, and improved energy levels these cannot be missed. They are also angiogenic, the fancy word for growing blood vessels... which can be negative for conditions such as cancer/tumors that scavenge blood vessels in development to support their evil plans. It's the high levels if nitrates in these substances that account for many of the health benefits, not to mention the vitamins and minerals and alkaloids in accompaniment!
- Blueberries/ dark berries: Saving the best for last! Best tasting that is. Blueberries and other dark berries are great neurogenic promoters, increasing the growth of neurons in the brain by increasing brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). These also promote longevity and general health by lending their pterostilbene and anthocyanin content, respectively. These lovely fruits will improve your memory and your palate will thank you.
- Mushrooms: An oddity in American culture, but re-gaining popularity as a meat substitute, health supplement, cancer adjuvant and so much more. The best of the list are Reishi, Chaga (tea form), Agaricus Blazei, Turkey Tail, Lions Mane, and Maitake. They improve immunity, cardiovascular health, brain health, and gut health on a wide variety of parameters depending on the fungi and its method of preparation. Give them a try & you won't say bye to these magical lifeforms!
