Living with Endometriosis- And Foods That Can Help
What is Endometriosis? Facts about Endometriosis Infographic
Many of my followers may not know this, but I have a condition that is called Endometriosis and the last few years it has been very rough on me. This condition is one that women get and affects their uterus. The actual condition is that the uterus lining grows on the outside of the uterus covering other organs. When it comes time for menstruation, the woman’s body sends out chemicals to break down this lining and this is what we call her period.
The extra uterus lining with Endometriosis requires the woman’s body to send out more of this chemical to break down the extra lining, and this can cause extra pain and in extreme cases vomiting. This is not a curable condition and is not considered a disability but if left unchecked can cause infertility and lead to more serious conditions when the uterus lining covers more organs.
I did not notice this condition until I got into my forties. It began when I went back to work after studying for my associates and bachelors’ degree online. I began vomiting around the time of my period and didn’t know why. I was also experiencing more pain than normal. At that time everyone at the place I worked was sick and there was a virus going around. I didn’t think anything more about it.
Later that year, I decided instead of working I would go back to school online for my MBA and for the next year I tried to understand why I was getting sick each month. I had Blue Cross and Blue Shield medical coverage and went to my primary doctor and a gynecologist who both told me to take Motrin and gave me 800 mg Ibuprofen. The one doctor said to try and take the pills ahead of time to get them in my system before the pain started.
The ibuprofen would help to off set the chemical that was making me sick and help ease the pain of the cramps and the swelling. It sounded easy enough.
I tried this for a year. The pain did not get any better, but I was able to feel better during what I came to call “the attacks”. The sickness and recovery time started affecting my grades and so I decided it would be better for me to pause the degree, so I wouldn’t damage my GPA. I went back to work, not knowing if I would be able to work full-time because of my sickness.
I only worked for one month, but I did not get sick that month. During one of my emergency room trips for dehydration the doctor asked me if I had thought about getting a hysterectomy. But, at that time I was very attached to my uterus and still planned on becoming pregnant despite my age and my poor health. I said I would give it a year and see what happened. If I didn’t get pregnant in a year, I would consider the surgery.
During that hospital visit they did an ultrasound and gave me the actual diagnosis of Endometriosis. On the paper they sent home with me, I read that dancing would help along with moving around more. I started to correlate this information with the one month I worked full time and didn’t get sick. But then I started on Steemit and the moving was not happening as I was sitting on my computer day and night chasing that Steem.

So, it has been almost two years now since I decided I would consider a hysterectomy. My mother had one when she turned 40, but she had four children which made a difference in my decision. There had to be a way to fight this without giving up my ability to bare children.
Unfortunately, I had let this condition plague me for so long with little information from the medical field as to what I am supposed to do other than have my insides ripped from my body that I was not in any condition to refuse this treatment. With little choice I planned to bite the bullet and let it be done.
Without medical insurance this year, I was waiting until November 1st for open enrollment, so we could get some form of insurance and I could start the long tedious line of doctors who would give me permission to stop my suffering.
I talked with my friend @littlescribe and I told her that I had applied for government benefits and was given enough coverage to see a gynecologist and it will pay for birth control. Being a smoker, I have always stayed away from birth control because of the risk of blood clots and stroke. But she said they had come a long way with birth control.
The birth control stops the woman from ovulating, which results in less estrogen being released. Estrogen produces the uterus lining. (I’ve learned so much about this ya’ll.) The less estrogen released by the body, the less pain and symptoms of the woman’s period. So, in theory, if I stop ovulating, I would stop having these attacks. I have been dragging my feet on this but have not ruled this out as an option.
We both agreed that pregnancy was the best option because your body resets itself and provides you with all the chemicals and nutrients you will need. We joked about standing on our heads to improve the chances of conception, but in my mind, I knew that my condition was so bad that I’d need to find a way to ease it before those little sperms and eggs had a chance in my body.

Then yesterday I was listening to @wipgirl on her show Hacking Mental Performance and she was talking about motivation and determination and finding a way to stop the insanity in our lives. I realized I had programmed myself to this condition and I was no longer fighting it. In essence I gave up.
I was reaching for the pills when I felt a little pain and becoming best friends with the heating pad. I was no longer even trying to make plans outside of the house, because I didn’t want to take the chance I would need to be sick. I took my bucket with me everywhere and awaited the three-day downtime each month; every 20 days now.
I didn’t like that, and as the deadline for November 1st got closer, I wanted to be sure there wasn’t any other way around this condition other than scooping out my insides like pumpkin seeds.

I went to Google yet again and looked up all the articles I could about the topic and scrolled past the medical sites telling me to seek a doctor. I had already talked to the doctors and they were no help, and neither were the pages of instructions of how to surgically remove this excess uterus lining.
I finally found some helpful information. The articles explained the reason behind the condition and pointed to all the things in my life I was doing wrong, and of course I knew the whole time I was doing wrong but didn’t connect the dots.
Exercise releases Serotonin which results in a woman’s body needing less estrogen. If the woman’s body releases more Serotonins, her body will need to supply less estrogen. The less estrogen produced, the less uterus lining that is created, and the less work a woman’s body must do during her period to remove it.

Serotonin is the chemical in your body that makes you feel happy.
Basically, my body is sad.
It is sad because I sat there on my computer for years and didn’t move.
It is sad because I stopped taking vitamins.
It is sad because I don’t dance anymore.
It is sad because I don’t eat fish.
All easy fixes in my mind!

The worst part about all of this is that I could not sit still when I started my college classes. I had to force myself to sit at the computer long enough to get my work done. The more school work I attempted, the longer I would sit there, and this was the start of my destruction. I’m not blaming Obama for my condition, but if he hadn’t offered free college tuition this may never had happened.
I’m Kidding! But not really.
The online classes and my new routine of sitting on my ass and snacking resulted in excess fat. These extra pounds, and the fact that I was ending my thirties crushed my motivation to exercise. The less I exercised, the more trouble I had losing weight, and the less I was motivated to move at all. Soon my doctor was telling me I had high cholesterol.
Of course, I needed to quit smoking.
When I started getting sick, I started losing the weight, but I still was not exercising or eating right. We had almost completely taken salads out of our diet, and I was cooking less raw vegetables. I had also grown tired of fish and asked my husband to buy less of it. After an attack, I would run to fast food because it was instant nourishment, and it gave me comfort. We buy our meat in bulk so, I eat a lot of red meat and I survive off caffeine.
I would then choose high sugar and fat snacks to try and boost my weight because it was becoming frightening low. No matter how much I ate, the condition never eased, and got worse going from one time a month to two times a month.
I’m hoping this new information I got will help me understand the changes I need to make in my diet and in my life to improve this condition.
Even if I must eat raw avocados- yuck.
The changes I plan to make will be:
Schedule at least 20 minutes of cardio exercise three times a week.
Eat less red meat.
Eat more vegetables and fruits.
Eat more foods rich in Omega-3.
Reduce my computer time.
Reduce my smoking.
Drink less caffeine.

These may seem like easy changes and in my mind, they are but I know this is going to be a challenge.
The advice I would give to anyone that suffers from Endometriosis or any kind of menstrual pain is to check your exercise and eating habits before running to the doctor. Always do your own research.
I will continue to update my blog if I see any remarkable changes in my condition. This way I can test my theory and change my own health. I have included the articles I read on this issue if you would like to learn more about the foods you need to eat, or the benefits of the foods and chemicals such as Serotonin.
At the age of 45 I still want to have a baby, but I do accept the fact that I may never have one. This is no longer a fight to have a baby to me, but a fight to have my life back. This condition is more than aggravating and has prevented me from going to school, working, and doing my everyday household chores.
I don’t believe that I need to take the medical route to treat this condition and that I can change the behaviors in my life that are causing it. I plan to continue to weigh the medical options while making changes that could ease this condition.
No matter what condition you are facing, you can always make small changes in your life that could help. You know what to do. So, do what you need to live better so you can feel better too. Be sure to do it now, while you still can!

Thank you so much for this post! My youngest daughter, age 26, has endometriosis and really struggles with the pain, the nausea, etc. She had so many procedures done before being properly diagnosed, it's ridiculous. Out of desperation, she is currently she is trying out the Mirena IUD despite the potential unpleasant side effects. I will send her the link to your article so she can get more ideas. Do keep us updated on your progress, please!

Thanks for reading! I was really at the end of my rope when I researched further. It makes a difference when you start treating it. It doesn't get any better. I wrote down a list of the foods I can eat which are not in my kitchen, so it may take me a week to gather enough to eat all day. I eat all of the dangerous foods on the list and coffee every morning, so I will need to make big changes to see results. Still must be better than suffering! I hope your daughter feels better soon. I'm happy to pass on the information. I really don't want to do anything medical and I know there's not much help there.
One of the links also talked about the estrogen in products we use everyday like dryer sheets and the bottles for water. I also drink cases of bottled water. I am drinking water from the tap now. I might make some infused water this week. I also read that licorice helps and anything that helps to clean out your liver.
