Long hours sitting? Be careful, it can kill you!!!

in health •  7 years ago  (edited)

You might work all day or stay home watching the children. At some point, you just wanna relax and enjoy a good program on the TV, enjoy a book or just play with your video games. What about if those simple habits can kill you? Yes. It's that simple.

There are data that support this statement. In a new study, being in the chair for too long can increase the chances of having cardiovascular disease. In other 47 studies that investigate sedentary life, the participants develop cardiovascular disease and diabetes type 2.

Having a sedentary life can double your gaining weight. When gaining weight starts to enter our life, other problems come with it. Respiratory problems can accompany the gaining weight. Not only this matter, your legs would start to hurt and standing up each time would be a struggle. Your quality of life would decrease. Obese people sit 2.5 times more than thin people.

What happens to the body when you sit?

When we sit for long hours our legs muscles shut off, our metabolism decreases, our good cholesterol drops and the effectiveness of the insulin decreases.
Exercising can lower the chances of developing diseases. This depends on the time and the impact of the exercises that you might be doing. If your sedentary time has an average of 8-12 hours, then you might start changing your life style. By staying with these habits your chances of developing diabetes increase by 90%.

How to start?

If you are worried about this and want to start changing your routine, then here are some useful tips that can help you :

  1. On the commercials, stretch your legs and walk around your house or apartment.

  2. Prepare healthy snack and place them in a visible place on the fridge. This way when you open the fridge, you grab the healthy snack first.

  3. Do a schedule and have different activities during the day and change them few times a week. (Example: Go to the park and read, call some friends and visit a place, etc)

  4. Download an application in your mobile and start making progress each day at your time. Try 30 minutes a day and always at the same hour. Your goal should be to exercise an hour a day but don't rush it. Take your time. Good changes and permanent changes are better doing them slowly.

  5. When you go to the grocery store, leave your car a little far away. This way you can do some exercise outside your house.

Be aware of how much you sit before sitting becomes the new smoking.

Neck and back pain is becoming very common because of sitting long hours.

Great post. Sedentary life is very dangerous. Even if you have a sitting job, you have to get up and stretch every 20 minutes. Sedentary life also causes Type 2 diabetics. It's truly equal to smoking a few packs of cigarettes a day.

For people in developed countries where you have elevators, you can also start by avoiding the elevator. Climbing through the stairs is a good way to go rather than just sitting in the elevator. Great job @simonjones

I quite agree with you

I'm a pretty fit guy. I attend Spartan Race marathons, work out regularly, and can deadlift and squat double my body weight. That being said I got addicted to a video game for a week and I swear I had cardio and heart issues from sitting down so long and so much.

These are really helpful tips, I think everyone should see them and implement in their daily life. Thank you, gave you an upvote. :)
Little thing have more power than we thought.

Absolutely. Especially with most jobs being computer-based, everyone tends to spend most of their days sitting. They sit in their cars or trains to go home. And then we sit at home watching NetFlix or whatever else it might be. It has become hard to even get in a few steps during the day because there are elevators, and there are escalators, and there are delivery services. Thanks for this post.

You have added a powerful opinion. Your views are very important. Thanks.

You are very welcome!! :)

Many people do not know the effects of Long hours sitting, and we often see the illness caused by this trivial thing.
People may like it because they are comfortable, but the consequences can be short term in the long run too.
Thank you @simonjones for sharing a very useful post for the people :)

Wow what you post is very useful for the crowd, and now I know that sitting too long is also not good for the body. Even my mom likes to say to me "if you sit for long you drink water so your waist does not hurt" because if we short of kidney water we will be disturbed, is that really?

Once again, thanks for the information, follow me @bangjal :)

Always have a time for exercise. I sit like 8 hours in front of my computer all day but i always take hourly breaks like strecthing & walking. I start my day with some yoga & have my body weight exercises in the evening.

Start slow then progress, little by little. :)

This is really a great reminder. I work from home so I sit most of the day. Sometimes because I am so consumed with my work, I can sit for hours on end. I exercise every other day, and sometimes I remember to walk around the house to stretch my legs. My husband says 'Sitting is the mother of all diseases' and I agree with that. I recently read about the Pomodoro technique which allows you to divide your time into chunks. I think this is a great way to work for 30 mins, walk around, get back to work and repeat the cycle again. Very informative and helpful, thanks again!

UPVOTED.
very good.
I would be happy if you like to follow me and give your opinion about my posts.
Thanks.

Totally agree with you. Some great tips there. Fully determined to bring a change in my working habits as I have been working for long hours for quite some time.

Great post! I'm sure it helps a lot of people, who don't know that sitting too much can cause health problems! Especially when you have an office job, where you sit in front of your computer the whole day, you should make sure to move every hour and take a few breaks :)

Really helpful tips ... I love that

Thank you for sharing such an informative article. This is a common problem now a days and every body especially in office is so busy in their office work that they don't know that this long time sitting is killing them.
I thiknk everybody should read this post and should follow these useful tips.
Really Enjoyed your post. You can also visit my blog @smartgeek. Thank You

I quit my job 4 years ago I was weighing 212 pounds, and was sitting at work for 9 hours a day and when I got home I sat to use my computer. Once I quit I still sit a lot at the computer but I also walk at least 10 kilometers a day, and I am now weighing 190 pounds, so Iam in much better shape than I was for the last 15 years.

Great post, very useful, thank you for sharing
