Why YOU Should Drink More Water - 10 Benefits And Tips

in health •  8 years ago  (edited)

Yes, I know. We've all heard that "You should drink more water! It's healthy for you!"
And most of you have probably tried it and then gave up at some point.

But with this post, I want to actually show you the huge benefits of drinking water!

This is what 1 month of drinking 3 liters of water does to your body ...

1) It helps you lose weight.

Especially when drinking one glass of water right before your meal, you can reduce the feeling of hunger.

2) It lessens wrinkles.

Skin that is dehydrated tends to have more wrinkles, which can be visibly reduced when drinking enough.

3) It improves your brain efficiency.

When our brain is nurtured with enough water, you can work faster and more efficiently, as well as think more clearly.

4) It makes your skin clearer.

Toxins are being flushed out of your body, that would cause breakouts or inflammations.

5) It lessens muscle pain.

Often, muscles and joints are hurting because they are dehydrated.

6) It makes you more awake.

The number one reason for fatigue is Dehydration! You might be able to skip coffee if you stick to lots of water.

7) It improves your liver function.

When your liver is provided with lots of water, it manages to clean your blood even more efficiently.

8) It improves your digestion.

Drinking enough water helps make your digestion process more efficient.

9) It makes your immune system stronger.

Your body's defence mechanisms work more efficiently if your body is provided with enough water.

10) It improves your mood!

Often, we don't realize that Dehydration is the reason for mood swings or headache.

In Addition to that, it's sometimes also important when you drink your water:

  • Drink 2 glasses of water right when you wake up in the morning.
Your body needs this to fight the fluids he lost during the night.
  • Before your meal, drink a big glass of water (1/2 liter).
This way, you give your pancreas enough water to neutralize the stomach acid. It can also help reduce the hungry feeling, as mentioned above.
  • Drink only very little or nothing directly after a meal.
If you drink lots of fluids after a meal, it thins down the stomach acids too much, making your digestion slower.
  • Drink a lot of water 2.5 hours after a meal.
At this point, a lot of your meal has been digested and is ready to be transported through your bowel.
  • Drink a lot of water before your workout.
Your body needs water to make sure you are performing at your best potential. If you don't drink enough prior to your workout, and then you lose too much through sweating, your body is in a water deficit which may lead to  a poor performance.

as usual a very good post !
i try to drink 3L water a day, but sometimes i just forget drinking.

Thank you!
Yes I know I forget it too, especially since I found Steemit I just spend too much time focused on my writing and forget to drink.. But it's important ! set yourself a timer ;)

.

Being renown among my friends as being the one who helps everyone watering themselves, I was once told that of all attempts at trying to have more energy drinking water was the first and foremost important trick. thanks for sharing such ideas, keep on thriving and namaste :)

thanks for sharing your story. That's awesome that YOU are the one animating others to drink more. Keep it up! Namaste :)

Liquids are the best way to break a fast, and water in the morning is your best bet to get some real great health benefits!

haha that meme fits perfectly. And you're right, everyone should start their day with a glass of water!

Cherries and some other fruit is also good after a fast. Water is most important as we are mostly water. It only makes sense.

Okay, I'm taking this a sign now. Today I have seen THREE articles about drinking more water, including this one, so I have to give it a shot!

you are right, that was a sign! now you definitely have to try it!

pertinent question @sirwinchester, are those gif copyright free? what's the source? did you make them?

they are from giphy. I often make my own gifs though, and then upload it to giphy myself and use that link.

@sirwinchester You should never drink that much water all your doing is flushing out the electrolytes you need to live only drink water when your thirsty , i used to believe this myth as well.

this only works with fresh spring water and maybe mineral water but nothing else.

When you drink too much plain water, your electrolytes no longer can balance the exchange of fluid inside and outside the cell. This causes parts of your cells to swell and others to dehydrate (due to loss of salt).

Also, realize what you input doesn't equal what you output. If you drink a glass of water, you do not urinate a glass of water. You will urinate a glass full of urine, which is filled with electrolytes and other stuff. So urine is flushing out minerals.

Thanks for the information, very interesting. I love how people are sharing their knowledge on steemit and I love to learn more!

I drink a lot of flavored sugar free water can't stand the taste of tap water

Tap water in general isn't healthy, you should definitely filter it first.
What you could try is infusing your filtered water with fruit such as lemon, lime, mint or berries to give it some more taste

Yeah sounds better than plain water

There are some interesting points made that I haven't thought of. It is a game changer for me. I'm definitely going to drink more water before exercising.

Thanks for sharing! I have seen a relationship between breakouts and not drinking enough water often in myself. Lately, I have been drinking more and my face has cleared up a lot!

Very simple explanation about a very important topic. Making education accessible for everyone!

thanks for your kind words :)

In recent days I eat a lot of watermelons. The thirst entirely disappeared ;)
And Paul Bragg has a wonderful book on this topic.

great suggestion, thank you! I also love watermelon, it's a great source to get rehydrated.

I have an app on my phone that reminds me to drink more, but still I find it very hard :/

Yes I know, sometimes a simple reminder App isn't enough. Try having a large bottle around you at all times, that you refill once during the day and you have to have it emptied before going to bed.

oh well, I guess I should've listened to my Mom and drank more water.. my lips are always so dry -.-

moms are always right ;)
proper hydration helps against dry lips!

I'll definitely try that out.
3 liters of water daily for 1 month - challenge accepted.

good luck, let us know about the results ;)

sounds convincing.. but.. it's just too hard to stick with it!

I know it's hard, but worth it!

very nice post once again. you have my upvote! keep bringing education to steemit.

thank you! I enjoy helping and educating others as much as I can.

thanks for being such an inspiration! I will try this out!

thank YOU, and best of luck hope you can receive lots of benefits!

very informative post once again. I totally suck at drinking enough :S

thank you! Yes I know it's hard, but it's worth it!

Great post, most people are dehydrated and that affects everything you do on a daily basis.

thank you!
Yes you are right, most people would need WAY more water but don't even realize it.

awesome quote at the begging. water is the source of all life!

yes you are right. there would be no life without water ! No wonder earth is called the blue planet!

I never drink liquids with my meals.

oh wow, how do you do it?! I couldn't

I'm soooo bad with drinking enough! thx for reminding me again!

you're welcome ;)

@sirwinchester Thanks for this! Knew most of this information. Even more important for me since I got Meningitis last year and ended up with Hydrocephalus which is also called water on the brain as I have twice as much water in my brain.

Wow thanks for sharing your story. Hope you are doing well now and everything turned out fine!

I wish water tasted better :(

haha I know if you grew up only drinking soda or juice water tastes really plane, but just try watering down your drink bit by bit over the course of a few weeks, until you end up drinking just plain water. and believe me, some day you won't even miss any other taste and you will enjoy drinking water! Talking from my own experience here!

Good point. I'll give it a try :)

Good post. You sound just like my doctor.

hahaha, maybe you should listen to your doctor more ;)

I feel like starting with 2 huge glasses of water gets you in the routine of drinking more throughout the day. I always drink a gallon or more a day. So much that my stomach always sloshes audibly when I jump around. My sisters make fun of my forever sloshy tummy. Now I add a spoonful of apple cider vinegar to a few glasses per day...Sour water as my 2 year old call it. Hahaha! :)

That's good though! Better to have a sloshy tummy than to have dry skin. You should teach your son the same habit :)

Seeing this post made me think about ways to remind people about hydration. I looked into it a little bit and saw there are a few options for wearables that monitor hydration. Halo Wearables is one tailored for athletes.

I wonder if there is anyone interested in making something even less invasive than a watch-like wearable.

If I'm working out and going through the day I wouldn't really want anything bulky on my wrist, but wondered if maybe there could be a ring or bracelet or necklace that would monitor hydration and send text alerts to your phone when you should have a glass of water.

I know I should be drinking more, but often get busy and forget. An app that monitored my hydration in real time would go far to help a lot of people. I can see this especially for those who exert a lot of energy, but also being given by insurance providers to customers to try to keep them more healthy and active.

Just a brief idea that came to mind while reading your post.

Yes, some form of jewellery that would measure your hydration levels would be awesome! Many people struggle with this and the regular apps often don't help enough. You are right that there is still much room for improvement in this field.

Yes and a wearable that doesn't look like a wearable. I think most wearables right now do not look very fashionable. Or even some sort of tooth implant that could do all the monitoring without any need to really wear anything at all.

Very true!nice post!

thank you :))

Really nice simple easy to read information. I have been trying to cut down on soda, a couple days ago I started trying to drink more water for some of the same reasons mentioned here. I find using an app on my phone helps me keep track. Plus it makes it like a game and helps build a new better habit at the same time.

thank you! Good job for starting the journey and trying to drink more water. Great to hear that an App can help you. Keep it up and stick with it, wishing you all the best!

Very nice content, keep going the great work!

thank you, appreciate your feedback!

Don't drink regularly from US tap water.

No you should definitely filter your water first (or drink bottled water) with a high pH level if possible.

i've found this all to be very true. Great post!

thank you, I like to share my knowledge and help and inform others.

Loving these educational posts from you. Steemit needs more content like this! followed!

Thank you, appreciate it! I do my best to help others.

Drinking water also help to clean you body and makes your kidneys works better.
Unfortunately this also lead to the missing point 11) It makes you pee ;)

haha you are right! This should be the disclaimer to all the positive points: "but be careful. it makes you pee".

that last picture with the whale is so cute and so fitting for steemit!

;)

Thank you for this post! This reminded me to drink more again. I only do little swallows. That's why it is still hard for me to drink a lot but I'm working on it. I want my brain and body to function better.
Also, I started to not drink faucet water anymore but mainly from glass bottles.
Which "water-brand" do you recommend?
