22 year old dies of drug overdose. WHY???

Last night a mother grieved for her 22 year old son. He had overdosed on Heroin. He was described as a good kid, an honors student who had got in with the wrong crowd. All I could think about was how it felt to be in his shoes. I am guessing he was a very sensitive man. I don’t have enough details about his life to understand what made him turn to drugs but I am sure it was to numb feelings. He must have felt like he was all alone, misunderstood. He heard all the messages that the media sends out about what it means to be socially acceptable. Things like Men do not show emotions, Men are strong and tough, Men don’t cry etc... And none of these messages could he identify with. He felt ashamed about who he was, how he grew up, and with the use of drugs, he just didn’t care about these things.

He had recently graduated from a drug rehab and was having a hard time adjusting to reality. He had to deal with accepting all the things he had done while on drugs and when feeling started to come out he had no way to numb them. He was in a rough spot. He could not accept his thoughts and emotions, he was overwhelmed and he could not numb his feelings. His mother had been diagnosed with cancer and she was getting sicker. The young man shut down. When you asked him how he was doing his reply was “Fine”.

Our Ego tells us that we are different. “It tells us that we are fine all by ourselves and that we don’t need anyone. Our Ego tells us that we are better than everyone else. If we listen to our ego we can get very lonely. We stop reaching out to connect with others. We withdraw from others that are trying to connect with us. We can become very self-centered and we start to hear other voices. The inner critic tells us that we are not worthy and we are not good enough, smart enough, thin enough etc. It tells us that we do not do enough, have enough, and we can not be enough. Shame and fear start to talk to us and tell us to stay small, be quite, do not trust, and be safe. Still other voices tell us that we are victims and that others have the power to make us miserable. When these voices get together we start to tell a story about ourselves. When we listen and believe the voices the story becomes our reality.

The feelings of worthlessness, self-hate, resentments, fear and anger become overwhelming and we seek out ways to escape. We finds ways to get Numb. We use Drugs, Alcohol, Food, and Sex to run from what we feel. We run from who we think we are. Eventually these things stop working and when there is nowhere to run, Death seems like the only choice.

According to the New York Times, 59,000 people have died from an overdose in 2016. This number is up from last year and is most likely due to a rise in synthetic drugs hitting the market. Heroin is being cut with a drug called fentanyl that has caused many heroin users to overdose and die. Drug overdose is the leading cause of death in Americans under 50.

Good post, you are my new favorite author ☺

Thank for the support @libert

therefore,
we need to know ourselves and the environment

I have two siblings who face addictions and this is one of my worst fears. :/

I also have family with addiction issues. It is not easy. The best we can do is to have others in the same situation to talk to. The worst thing we can do is to suffer by ourselves

Agreed! We have a great resource out here called The Family's Battle that supports families dealing with addiction.

Um how about we blame the pharma companies for making pain killers more lethal than ever! It's a fact that Fentanyl is approx 50 times stronger than heroin. 50!!!! That's insanity! And of course this same company has been heavily funding anti-marijuana legislation to keep their profits rolling. A hooked patient is a repeat customer. They don't want MJ to be legal because they know people will choose the natural plants vs some synthesized poison.

Most young kids start out taking prescription pain pills and later move on to heroin. You never hear about kids overdosing on pot

Thanks for sharing and reaching out to others with this experience. There are a lot people out there with issues just like this struggling to quit but can't. I know this message will do them a great deal of good and also prevent many from even entertaining the idea of starting it.

Thanks for the comment. People with these issues can use all the help they can get

Exactly. I wish you all the best in your campaign

Good post - the drug situation world wide is out of control - here in the Cape, we have a huge drug problem.
Drug lords move into the small country towns and get the youth hooked - then with the unemployment in the country, the youth turn to drugs as a means of escape.
Drug dealers target young school children - the whole thing is too tragic for words - parents need to be on their guard all the time.

The drug problem seems to be out of control everywhere. We seem to be treating the problem of addiction but not the cause

Done.

drug laws cause death

needs to be changed ASAP, war on drugs = war on people. PUNKT!

The war on drugs definitely is not working

Have you ever wondered why US military, surveillance, and industrial super-power still has not won the 'war on terrorism' after decades of fighting a rag-tag, scattered collection of militants whose most prized weapon is pickup truck with a machine gun bolted down in the bed. If not, why not?

Okay, have you ever wondered why after the US gov't has been fighting the so-called 'war on drugs' for decades, the leading cause of death in Americans under 50 is drug overdose? Again, if not, why not?

The 'Global War on Terrorism' or GWOT, and the 'War on Drugs' - pretty catchy names aren't they? That's our government hard at work protecting the American people. Kind of makes you want to stand-up, place your hand over your heart, and recite the pledge of allegiance, doesn't it?

Okay, back to reality. The CIA was, no doubt, heavily involved in the 911 attack and the creation of ISIS. And the CIA is currently transporting heroin into the US from Afghanistan on board US military and chartered aircraft. That's where all that heroin is coming from. Let that one sink in - if you can handle the truth!

I can handle the truth. Its greed . We the people need to wake up in order to see the bigger picture. Drugs are not the problem , they are the symptom. The fish stinks from the head

This is so sad and shocking the number of people that die of drug overdose. I am actually speechless. In South Africa, there are 53 murders a day, so in total 19345 murders per year. So in the states, the people murder themselves with drugs at a much higher rate as the South African murder rate. It is terrible will have to look into our stats about drugs. This post is very well written!

Thanks for your comment. What is even more sad is that most are young people
