Hey steemians.
How are you doing?
Today I will talk about formaldehyde. I hope you like the publication.
Formaldehyde is a chemical substance that is present at room temperature in the form of a colorless gas that is suffocating and flammable. It is often marketed in liquid form commonly referred to as formalin. It is also known as methanal or formaldehyde.
Exposures to formaldehyde are both occupational and environmental. They occur in more than a hundred professional circles and a wide variety of sectors: veterinary, cosmetics, medical, industries, agriculture ... More than 190 000 workers would today be exposed to formaldehyde. The strongest exhibitions are in the sectors of health (anatomopathologists), agriculture, chemical industry and funeral pumps (embalmers), but also in the manufacture of paper or certain resins. Formaldehyde is one of the pollutants of the air of the places of life: offices, housing ...
Formaldehyde and cancer
IARC- INTERNATIONAL AGENCY FOR RESEARCH ON CANCER classifies proven carcinogenic formaldehyde in humans (Group 1) in 2004 (IARC, 2006). The working group felt that there was sufficient evidence that formaldehyde causes nasopharyngeal cancer (based on concordant epidemiological studies in the workplace).
In 2009, a new IARC working group concluded that there are sufficient indications of human carcinogenicity for leukemia and more particularly for human myeloid leukemia (Hauptmann, 2009; Zhang , 2009). Indications of carcinogenicity in humans for nasal cavities and sinuses of the face have been considered limited (Baan, 2009).
The National Toxicology Program in the United States indicates in its 12th Carcinogen Report published in June 2011 that there is sufficient evidence of carcinogenicity of formaldehyde from human studies (National Toxicology Program, 2011) .
Although in Europe the regulatory classification of formaldehyde remains a "category 3 carcinogen" (possible human carcinogen), following a more severe French proposal, this classification is currently being revised. In France, the decree of July 13, 2006, added the work exposing formaldehyde to the list of carcinogenic processes of the Labor Code. The regulations concerning the carcinogenic risk must therefore be applied.
In its report on the health risks associated with the presence of formaldehyde in occupational settings, Afsset reports epidemiological studies demonstrating levels of risk of nasopharyngeal cancer associated with various long-term aerial exposures corresponding to professional sectors. The increased risk is associated with exposure to a peak repetition of at least 5 mg / m3 (Afsset, 2009).
