Why Do My Legs Itch When I Run?

Have you ever felt the urge to itch after a workout? I myself have not experienced this, but I know someone who is experiencing this! And if you are also experiencing this, I might have the answer you are looking for !

So why do your legs itch when you do any cardio workouts?

Well, It has to do with how often you workout and if you maintain a regular exercise routine.
As your heart rate increases blood flows faster, and tiny capillaries and arteries in your muscles begin to expand rapidly.
If you are out of shape, your capillaries tend to collapse, not allowing as much blood to pass through. The expanding of the capillaries have nerves surrounding them, and those nerves become stimulated and send messages to the brain which reads the sensation as itching!

SO, if you are experiencing itchy legs or anywhere else in the body during exercise.... then it is a sign of being out of shape and to prevent this itchiness, You might need to get through this by practicing a regular exercise routine and hopefully it goes away after a while, in many cases it does. And if it is severely difficult to ignore this sensation during your run then try using some antihistamine creams and or taking oral anti-allergy medicines, but this is my opinion, and you should consult with your doctor or physician before taking any medicines if it is really bad.

Other common causes of itchy skin are:

  • allergies
  • histamine release- the body releases histamine during exercise, also known as vasodilator. The expansion of blood vessels can be felt as an itchy sensation by nervous system.
  • In rare cases, some people develop a exercise-induced naphylaxis, in which the body reacts to exercise as an allergic reaction making the body hypersensitive. Talk to your doctor if you are experiencing severe pain and itchiness.
