Because all humans can be wicked like that. Although it's far more likely if the person is a psychopath. And the psychopaths are the most likely to attain wealth and/or power. Especially power. That's why the government is even worse than big business. The more ruthless you are, the more likely you are to win your way to the top of the power hierarchy. And no one is better at gaslighting and deceiving people than a psychopath.
