A preliminary study published Thursday that will be presented as part of the Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Neurology, to be held in Los Angeles, California, revealed that tears may contain clues about whether someone has Parkinson's disease. .
Members of the Keck School of Medicine at the University of California, said the research is the first to show that tears can be a good way to diagnose early stages of Parkinson's disease that affects nerve function outside the brain.
The studies are carried out in tears in which the levels of a particular protein are measured, the oligomeric alpha-synuclein which establishes, depending on its high level and in contrast with other two, the probability of having said disease.
Being able to study something as simple as tears could help neurologists differentiate between people with Parkinson's disease in a non-invasive way, and even years before the first symptoms appear.
