White refined sugar is called one of the most harmful products of our time. The biological value is 0, but it brings us a lot of problems.
In addition to its high caloric content, which provokes diabetes, obesity, "delights" like problems with the skin, teeth, immunity, too, can not be avoided.
Also what absolutely there are no pluses? There is. Fast food for the brain. But whether it is worth all the other ills is a big question.
When I dealt with the theme of sugar, I first got lost in its many substitutes and alternatives, which turned out to be a pond of synthetic and natural ponds, but decided not to wander, but to try.
Brown is the same sugar, but unrefined, unrefined, and therefore retained vitamins and trace elements, which is good, right? They make it solely from reeds, because of beets it has a bad color and smell, as they write everywhere about it. I have not tried it yet, I will not say anything)
I started my way along useful sugars with fructose.
This is a natural sugar derived from fruits and vegetables. Less calories, more useful and tasty, and even sweeter than sugar 1.5 times, i.e. you need to put it down less.
What do I say? Really delicious, does not harm teeth, shape, gives habitual sweetness to dishes and drinks. It costs $3-4 for 700g. More expensive than sugar, of course, but still tolerable. Sugar costs 0,7$
Then my curious mind stumbled upon the description of another substitute - stevia - honey grass, which is very popular abroad, and whose fame has come to our depths.
Actually, everything here in the name, stevia - sweet grass, from it and receive valuable sugars. Too valuable if you look at the cost. 7$ for 200 g - this is a robust design.
I was waiting for something special but miracles did not happen.
Yes, it's sweet, but I did not like the taste at all. It has a specific aftertaste that is felt in the drink, and even in baking. We have not even eaten it yet, it has not gone so far) Although vitamins and other utilities in it even more than in fructose. Well, it's not mine at all.
I saw healthy food stores and synthetic substitutes, like sorbitol, xylitol, but there is no desire to try them, because the best things are in nature, the main thing is to find it.
Have you tried something from analogues of sugar?
Super post @taliakerch ;) I use Stevia and sometimes brown sugar if I really need the sugar taste because Stevia has an own taste what I can`t take always. White sugar I never use. Same story with unhealthy NaCl and healthy real rock salt.

Not refined natural salt like f.e. Himalaya Salt with all elements of "Periodic Table" . Not NaCl "Table Salt" where they took out "the dirt".. Same like white sugar. The body doesn't like it. I like Halite Salt. Pure ancient salt crystals of an era without men made chemical dirt. I will send you a photo of an nice piece of salt. Little Moment ;)

I support your article. My very first Steemit post was on this subject. We have a TV series called 'Sugar Free Farm' that is all about the dangers of added sugar.
