Definition

Vitamin B5 is present in all living cells and is part of coenzyme A that is important in the metabolism of proteins, fats and carbohydrates.

In humans, pantothenic acid is found in both lymph and blood plasma. It can withstand very moist heat, but withstands poor dry heat, acids and bases. It is a yellow-colored oil found in calcium and sodium in the form of calcium pantotenate.

Permitted Daily Dosage

According to Norwegian rules, the daily dose is 15mg. Recommended daily intake is 4-7mg.

Pantotenic acid is found in most foods, but the best sources are feed, egg yolk, beer, cheese, peanuts, vegetables, bran, beans and chicken.

Pantotenic acid can also be formed by the intestinal bacteria.

Function

Vitamin B5 is part of coenzyme A that is important in the turnover of the foods fat, proteins and carbohydrates. Coenzyme A is also important in the formation of fatty acids, cholesterol, steroids and for important neurotransmitters (including acetylcholine).

Vitamin B5 has stress regulating properties because it affects the adrenal gland hormones.

Generally, Vitamin B5 is beneficial for skin and nerve cells.

Deficiency symptoms are rare, but in the event of deficiencies, tiredness, muscle weakness, impaired general condition, depression and indigestion may be symptoms.

Practical use

Vitamin B5 is part of the Vitamin B complex, but can also be used alone as treatment for stress in doses of up to 50mg daily over time.

Furthermore, Vitamin B5 is used in daily doses of 50-100mg for 2-4 weeks by a condition known as bruxism (cutting, rubbing teeth).

Women suffering from premenstrual tension may also benefit from Vitamin B5 supplements in the form of doses of up to 50mg daily for a few weeks.

In addition, it will be beneficial with Vitamin B5 supplement for Multiple Sclerosis, Alcoholism, Arthritis and Nausea.

It may also indicate that Vitamin B5 inhibits the aging process and has a positive effect on wrinkles.

Older, pregnant and breastfeeding should make sure to get enough Vitamin B5.

No reported adverse reactions have been reported. Even at daily doses of more than 1000mg over six months, adverse reactions were not reported.
