It can be read everywhere that to be in good health, it is essential to walk 10,000 steps per day. But is this really the case and above all is it reasonable ?

It must be known that behind each idea of this type is actually hiding two very distinct things. On the one hand, a concept that can often be intrinsically interesting but on the other hand, simple marketing. Indeed, at a time when pedometers or other connected watches are in vogue, the best way to sell these items is to make people believe that they must have a certain number of steps per day to their credit and therefore count them daily.

However, do not be mistaken. Walking is an excellent activity for health and extremely healthy. And doing some statistics using a pedometer is not necessarily uninteresting. This will firstly determine his daily average. If you walk, on average, 2000 steps per day, you do not need to go to 10,000 the next day. It would be as silly as dangerous. On the other hand, you can give yourself the objective of going up to 3000 steps a day the following month. If all goes well, then slightly increase your reference value without making a fixation on the result to hold. The idea is to develop new habits at home. For example, you park a little further from your target, get off the bus a stop early or avoid the elevators. This will allow you to reach your goal relatively naturally.

Another interesting aspect will be to walk once a week a little longer and longer. Why ? Just because the body gets used to certain routines relatively quickly and if you always walk at the same pace and the same number of steps, the effects collected will no longer be the same. In general, you always have to vary the intensity and, in a way, look for the latter from time to time to make you run out of steam.

Finally, a very important point, will be to get in the habit of listening to your body. If you feel exhausted and tired, do not worry. Rest and walk a little bit the next day or just the next week. In any case, the goal is to have fun while seeking a minimum of his will. If you are lucky enough to walk in nature, watch and listen to it !

This is really interesting. As a holistic health practitioner and an herbalist, I've been wondering where this 10,000 step rule came from and what you have said makes absolute sense. Marketing. Maintaining health is about so much more than simply following a set of rules. Individual needs must be taken into account. Thank you for making me think about this more.

You are totally welcome. Thanks for reading.
