Why Doing Something With Your Hands Isn’t Just a Hobby?

in health •  7 years ago

Most of my life happens on a screen:

I look at my computer screen all day every day.

I look at my smartphone screen only about 1000 times a day.

I look at my TV screen, only every single evening.

And sometimes I look at all the three screens at once.

And one day, totally unexpectedly for me, I reached a point where I could no longer look at a screen, not even for one minute…

I had piles of projects to complete, clients waiting for my response, and yet, there I was…

…sitting at my desk, unable to switch on the screen, feeling totally paralyzed.

The only thing I felt I could do, was to finally mend a broken earing, which I’d been meaning to do for about a few years now…

And so the journey began:

the broken earring led me to the world of jewellery making and a few jewelry pieces (made by me) I am very fond of,

which in turn led me back to the world of crochet and knitting, which I last visited in my teens.

After about a week of this bizarre and yet so liberating ‘no-screen switched on’ existence, I came out of my cave:

energized, buzzing with new ideas and ready to face the screen again ;-)

Only now I am doing it differently:

I don’t care how busy it gets on ‘the screen’, I treat my off-screen hobbies like something that’s precious and vital to my daily existence.

Crafting regularly, for me, is like drinking water every day and eating a healthy diet – it keeps my mind energized, my soul happy and my heart excited.

If you are like me and spend most of your life on a screen, I challenge you, take a break, create something with your hands, or simply mend something.

You’ll be surprised at the levels of your contentment and satisfaction, it feels even better than claiming your Steemit rewards seven days later :-)

Screen detox is so hard! I use the Stay Focused App and turn off the internet between 8 and 5:30 so I cannot goof off at work... then I try to read a few chapters in a book every night.
Good luck with your detox!

I also find it hard, but necessary...
I've heard in South Korea they have special detox clinics for this particular purpose - there's no internet coverage in these places, no way to connect to the cyberspace. I wouldn't like to reach a point where I have to go into one of these... :-)

Dear friend, you're absolutely right. We all have to find a hobby to feel good about life!
Congratulations on being able to take that step.

Thanks @ginga !

I have identified a lot with you, in the first part of your post, perish you would have written my life with the screen. Totally in agreement with you, we must give priority to our hobbies and look for time for it daily. And I to be away from the screen and everything, crochet and crochet and crochet... A big greeting and thanks for sharing such a nutritious expetience.

It's quite extraordinary how we live very similar lives even if we never met...
Definitely, life has to come first, and work second...
Thanks for reading and commenting, hope you have a lovely day with lots of crochet hours in it :-) !

These are such great points and great advice. I think we all need to do a screen detox from time to time. I did take a couple of weeks off of Steemit to focus just on my family and it felt really good to do that. I admit it was hard at first but it’s possible.

I too enjoy doing things with my hands and it is so rewarding :). Thanks for sharing~

Your jewelry pieces are lovely btw!

Thanks @crosheille !
I sometimes think we used to have so much more freedom before the time of smartphones and social media...
but we have to live in the present and somehow learn to manage this modern lifestyle in such a way that our actual lives wouldn't suffer :D
I feel finding a balance in life is a truly big art.

I couldn’t agree more! We have to find balance for sure.

Your jewelry is really great! And so is your crochet. I read...usually several hours each day and more if the book is great and I take photos, usually nature photos, so that gets me outdoors watching and observing.

Thanks @melinda010100 !
Reading is such a nice thing to do, lets us live somebody else's life for a few hours :-)
