Wow January is here again and the Harmattan season as usual, couldn't help but come with it. It is usually characterized by a lot of dust, wind, coldness in the already dry atmosphere.

Many a time, this season catches us off guard, but i bet this time, we all are ready with our stringent guards on so we don't get looking like we were just swept off a desert. Keeping our bodily moisture levels up in these times is key to sailing smoothly through the harsh weather. For this reason, @yawgh comes your way with a few hydration and health tips. Take your time and go through them, one or two may help.

1. Constantly Staying Hydrated

Staying hydrated actually needs to be a conscious effort from within. Endeavor to hold down between 2 and 4 litres of liquid a day. While doing this, keep in mind that this kind of hydration we are talking about should not include caffeinated drinks, cos they have ingredients that actually gets fluids out of our bodies. This means you may reconsider your levels of coffee intake during this period.

2. Eating Fats (The Healthy Ones):

Fats are not entirely bad. There are totally healthy fats that we all can conveniently take in without fear for high level choolestrol. The fats are actually healthy for the heart and deposits immense energy into our bodies. Nuts are a good source of these oils. Avocados, sunflower oil, and oil from seeds are no bad choices as well.

3. Taking in lots of Vitamin C:

No don't think too far. Taking in lots of vitamin C doesn't mean spending more on commercial Vit. C tablets. Try to include Vitamin C rich foods in your meals and you're good to go. Eat lots of oranges and berries, add tomato to your stews and soups cos these will keep catarrh away, relegate sneezing to the rear, and make your skin just as fresh.

4. Not taking in too much Soft drinks:

It's quite difficult to stay totally away from soft drinks at this time, with the main reason that almost everyone around wants this exact same thing, but trust me, its really possible. These soft drinks actually tend to dehydrate our bodies and our skins get dry even faster the more we take them. At least for the span of time that this harmattan would last, try to replace these drinks with even healthier, locally made drinks. Cow milk would do just great. Millet Shake and a couple of these local beverages are highly recommended.

There is nothing we can do about this season, except to adapt to a lifestyle that will see us through it strongly and peacefully as well.

Stay safe and healthy until next time.
