The public health emergency for mpox has officially ended. We are now down to single digit daily cases. There hasn't been a rise in test positivity, so this isn't being driven by lower testing.
This doesn't necessarily mean the risk is gone. We could see a resurgence in the future. So make sure you are vaccinated if eligible.
The mpox vaccine is effective. Cases were 10x higher in unvaccinated individuals compared to fully vaccinated individuals. Widespread eligibility isn't advised by the CDC at this time, but eligibility has broadened compared to the start of this outbreak, so check with your state to see if you are eligible. Generally speaking those at higher risk of exposure are eligible, particularly those with multiple or new sexual partners.
Vaccination rates among the eligible population are not especially high, so other factors may have contributed to the decline in addition to vaccination.
