TAVI vs traditional surgery

Traditional aortic valve surgery, known as aortic valve replacement surgery, has long been considered the only effective treatment for severe aortic stenosis. However, in recent years, a new technology has emerged, known as TAVI (Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation), which offers a less invasive yet equally effective alternative.

The main difference between TAVI and traditional aortic valve surgery is that TAVI uses a catheter, instead of opening the patient's chest. During the TAVI procedure, a catheter is inserted through an artery in the patient's arm or leg and then advanced into the femoral artery and up to the aorta. The new aortic valve, typically made of biological tissue, is then inserted through the catheter and positioned inside the old valve.

In comparison, traditional surgery requires opening the patient's chest and removing the old aortic valve before inserting the new valve and closing the patient's chest.

There are several advantages to choosing TAVI over traditional aortic valve surgery. Firstly, TAVI is a less invasive procedure and therefore carries a lower risk of surgical complications. In particular, the likelihood of infections and respiratory problems is much lower with TAVI compared to open-heart surgery.

Secondly, recovery after TAVI is generally faster than with traditional surgery. Many patients who undergo TAVI can return to their normal daily activities within a few days of the procedure, whereas patients who have undergone open-heart surgery may require weeks or months to fully recover.

Finally, TAVI can be performed on elderly or frail patients who may not be able to tolerate traditional surgery. In particular, patients with pre-existing heart or lung diseases may be better candidates for TAVI than traditional aortic valve surgery.

Overall, TAVI is an innovative technology that has been shown to be equally effective and safe as traditional aortic valve surgery but with a lower risk of complications and faster recovery. However, as with any medical procedure, it is important to discuss treatment options with your doctor and evaluate the specific risks and benefits for each patient.
