Jesus in the Gospel of Saint Matthew after announcing the Kingdom of God for the first time in the Sermon on the Mount with the Beatitudes, made an exposition about this spiritual doctrine in a speech centered on seven mysterious parables while he was teaching in Galilee.
With these parables, Jesus delved into his teachings and showed this Kingdom in a unique and original way. The Kingdom is growth and development like the seed that germinates in the parable of the sower, or like the flour that mixed with yeast makes the dough grow. Also, the Kingdom of God is self-knowledge with the parable of the hidden treasure and the parable of the pearl. With all this Jesus taught us that the Kingdom of God, the empire or dominion of divine perfections, is an invitation to a new type of freedom, to live the gifts inherited from above: "Be merciful, just as your heavenly Father is merciful" Luke 6:36.
But Jesus, after teaching six beautiful parables, ended with a seventh parable that is nothing like the previous ones, the parable of the net, the Kingdom of God with this parable acquired for his disciples a new meaning.
For Jesus, the ultimate meaning of the Kingdom of God is the resolution of the problem of evil on earth, and according to the ideas of Jesus, in the last days there will be a separation between the righteous and sinners along with a final judgment from God, and in this way he expressed this prophecy metaphorically with the parable of the net:
"The kingdom of heaven is like a net that was let down into the lake and caught all kinds of fish. When it was full, the fishermen pulled it up on the shore. Then they sat down and collected the good fish in baskets, but threw the bad away. This is how it will be at the end of the age. The angels will come and separate the wicked from the righteous and throw them into the blazing furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth." Matthew 13:47-50.
