The language of ivrit ( עברית ) Exodus 7, Post #4

in hebrew •  yesterday

Welcome to my Hebrew reading & language series.

Exodus 8:12-15

This week we see the frogs are gone and, because Far'oh (Pharaoh) had his heavy heart and did not keep his promise, God tells Moshe (Moses) to instruct his brother to stretch out his staff and strike the dust of the earth. He let everyone know before hand what would be the result of this action, telling all that the dust would become gnats.

Aharon (Aaron) did that and every man and animal had gnats on them. This was the case in all the land of Mitsraim (Egypt). What's cool is that the magicians of the land could not accomplish the same feat. Those same char'toomim (magicians) then recognized the "Finger of Elohim" but Far'oh did not listen yet again.

Our disparity of verse numbers continues as we are reading 12-15 in Hebrew and the same sentences in English are labeled 16 through 19. Again, I left the verse numbers in the English text so you can see for yourself that the content is the same but the numbering does not match. What an oddity.

Today's reading

English

16 Then YHVH said to Moses, "Say to Aaron, 'Stretch out your staff and strike the dust of the earth, so that it may become gnats in all the land of Egypt.'" 17 And they did so. Aaron stretched out his hand with his staff and struck the dust of the earth, and there were gnats on man and beast. All the dust of the earth became gnats in all the land of Egypt. 18 The magicians tried by their secret arts to produce gnats, but they could not. So there were gnats on man and beast. 19 Then the magicians said to Pharaoh, "This is the finger of God." But Pharaoh's heart was hardened, and he would not listen to them, as YHVH had said.
