The ancient language of ivrit ( עברית ) - Yod

in hebrew •  7 years ago  (edited)

Shabbat Shalom

Like the Alphabet, The letters in Hebrew are called the Alef - Beyt and they are presented on my blog from bottom to the top so you can learn them order, then to read them right to left. You will see what the original "Bible" said and what the names meant as they went through the stories of old.

Here is Yod : symbolizing a hand, fist, outstretched arm, power and might.
note that the next lesson is on Kaf: also means "hand" (an open palm, weak)

Yod can be a consonant and sounds like "yellow"

Yod as a vowel sounds like "ee" many times and in "greet"

As the second consecutive vowel, it either extends and "ee" sound

  • Hey : the "y" or yod adds or extends the "ee" sound
  • Weigh: "i" adds the "ee" sound.

This is a very important letter

Above you have a written Yod (some write it Yud)

  • left, you have the spelling of the letter "yod"
  • right, you have the spelling of the word "yad" which means hand

Yod is the smallest letter. Like a little fist.

It is the first in the name of the almighty

It is the first in the name Yeshua

It performs many grammatical functions (that we will learn later)

It's the tenth letter and is the number 10 when used as a number.

 - - -

Where we are so far?

source

Only 12 more letters and you will be reading!

The vowels only have about five sounds - and I will keep telling you how they sound as we go

  • don't worry about the names of the vowels unless you plan to teach Hebrew.

I hope to add meaning to these little lessons each Shabbat as we go. Then we can read together with the vowel points in place and see how it all jives with English.

Thanks for taking the time to read.

I am amazed at your ability to take something as intricate as this, and explain it in a way that it becomes understandable, in all honesty numerous classes at institutions that teach language could not have made me grasp what you explained above.

So Great work!

Looking forward to more lessons!

Thank you so much. every encouraging reply causes me to put more effort into making the pictures look better and keeping explanations simple.

thanks for sharing these nice post your sweet flower..

thanks friend for giving us knowledge and also for your effort for all ,best of luck god bless u and also am new here so am looking for your support i hope u support me also like other u do ? ...):

My pleasure, Steem-On

It certainly helps when each letter is related back to its original pictograph. The idea of a closed hand becomes like a word mnemonic helping us to remember each letter and the idea behind each letter. I am certain these tools were used to help the orators and teachers of old memorize these stories as part of the Original Oral Torah.

I am sure that it could have been!
I don't think I ever really realized how intricate it was until now...

Congratulations @hebrew!

English charactor A b c d and these are its hindi charactor ए बी सी डी

Another great lesson. I missed it when it was posted, maybe I should set an alert for each letter.... is there an app for that ? Yod is an awesome letter and I wonder if George Lucas got the idea of Yod-ah from this tiny letter. As Yoda is the Tiny teacher for Luke Skywalker and the other Jedi. There are many references to the Light and Dark side in Star Wars.... Luke and Leia both come from the word Luce or Light.......

Indeed... Grand Master Yoda, this peculiar syntax reminiscent of someone whose first language is Yiddish (“Yodish”)? More to the point, his name sounds a lot like “yada,” the Hebrew word meaning “to know.

Jedi .... Ye(hu)di ......... > The heroes of the Star Wars series are members of a “rebel alliance,” basically Maccabees in outer space. It's right there in the name: Jedi. The Hebrew letter yud is often anglicized as a “J,” and syllables occasionally get dropped in translation. Hence, a Biblical name like “Yehoshua” makes its way into English as “Joshua.” It's not much of a stretch to see how “Jedi” can be derived the original Hebrew word for Jew, “Yehudi.” http://www.aish.com/j/as/From-Jediism-to-Judaism-Star-Wars-as-Jewish-Allegory.html?mobile=yes

i had follow you and upvoted all the post and comments i like the way you explained each and evething its just apperceive keep it up hope for your better future

Of course. I am following you. I am honoured that you would follow me. I am quite new here and just trying to figure out how Steemit works. I have found some very good content so far. Especially your blog @hebrew that I found via a resteem on @offgridlife blog and a few other blogs so happy I followed. Do you usually post on Shabbat or different days and times ? I usually notice your new letters a day or so after they are posted. I see you put a lot of work into each post and it is all very helpful in the language learning process. I will try to upvote and resteem each post but my steem is quite low. I will give what I can .... and I really really appreciate your votes and comments. Best blog on Steemit for helpful content.

Because it costs me nothing to give you or anyone else a vote, I am quite liberal with them (not the liberal tag - the real word hehe). I love to help new people on the platform. I know many how now do no work unless it is related to steemit blogging.

Crypto currencies in general have freed many people from the slavery of debt and banking restrictions.

I try to post on shabbat, but would rather create the posts prior to my day of relaxation. I have no problem telling people about the King Eternal during Shabbat. That, I believe is allowed.

felling proud that u love to help new people ..):

thats just so sweet of you .. you help all the new blogger i can see you not leave any blogger with bear hand you just give them a vote that is so appreciateble ..im glad i get apportunity have your teaching class ☺☺

He was very consistent in developing his article on Hebrew language learning ok

Hi @hebrew i like the fact that Yod symbolises a fist hand and might. Infact i never knew i could be pronounced "ee"

So does this really mean Yesua can be pronouned as ayesua or eesua?

Wow left and right both have various pronounciation of yod and yad of course who says learning this is difficult? Thanks for the profounding knowledge on this language. God bless you

plz follow me

That is not how it works. Each vowel has a sound. In the case of Yeshua it's Yod with .. belew then Shin
Those first three letters can't be pronounced any other way but Yesh

Yud.... The Infinite Point

This small suspended letter contains so much ...

The letter yud, a small suspended point, reveals the spark of essential good hidden within the letter tet..... The secret of this point is the power of the Infinite to contain finite phenomena within Himself and express them to apparent external reality. Finite manifestation begins from a zero-dimensional point, thereafter developing into a one-dimensional line and two-dimensional surface. This is alluded to in the full spelling of the letter yud (yud-vav-dalet): “point” (yud), “line” (vav), “surface” (dalet)..... The initial point, the essential power of the yud, is the “little that holds much.” The “much” refers to the simple Infinity of G-d hidden within the initial point of revelation, which reflects itself as the Infinite potential of the point to develop and express itself in all the manifold finite phenomena of time and space. -

Interesting topic to read & learn. My small research on this topic gives me an awesome finding.

Appreciate your effort & keep it up~

Yeah - I love that early Hebrew representation of Yud. Could it be clearer? That is a bicep, elbow, and arm with a hand on it.

Yes it's fully cleared version than the modern one. Now I got the point why you said hand & elbow~

  ·  7 years ago (edited)

is the hands and elbow you mean the formation of latter and it's direction ...now its fully clear about this leatter

The first letter of each of the three passages of the Priestly Blessing begins with the yud:

יברכך ה' וישמרך—May G‑d bless you and guard you.

יאר ה' פניו אליך ויחנך—May G‑d shine His countenance upon you and be gracious to you.

ישא ה' פניו אליך וישם לך שלום—May G‑d turn His countenance toward you and grant you peace.

It looks like the word "May" is spelled 3 different ways there unless I am looking at the wrong word ?

THe another best language of ivrit yod yup great language thanks for sharing friend.

H kha ye

i think i'm little delay for the today's class :) it's almost weekend here. today class is for letter 10. i got it & it looks a very useful letter while using hebrew. nice post & excellent class @hebrew

@resteemia

A “formed” point: a crown above and a “pathway” below.
The smallest of the letters; The only letter suspended in midair.....

Floating like Yod-ah

So many lessons in each letter .... I love this letter yod, yud (yid, yad) - although it is the smallest of all the Hebrew letters it is the one Chosen to be 1st in the Name of God .... This reminds me of the time that God said. " Not because you are more numerous than any people did the Lord delight in you and choose you, for you are the least of all the peoples. זלֹ֣א מֵֽרֻבְּכֶ֞ם מִכָּל־הָֽעַמִּ֗ים חָשַׁ֧ק יְהֹוָ֛ה בָּכֶ֖ם וַיִּבְחַ֣ר בָּכֶ֑ם כִּֽי־אַתֶּ֥ם הַמְעַ֖ט מִכָּל־הָֽעַמִּֽים:

Like the Least among you shall be greatest.... the last shall be 1st ... the meek shall inherit the earth.

Yod is such a tiny and meek letter but so important

Yud may be the smallest letter but it is the letter used most often in the Torah.

I was so waiting for your next post to continue the learning mate! Thanks again for sharing and teaching us in such a simple and easy way!

Yod: This is the most amazing letter. The 1st letter of the Name of God. What an amazing Aleph-Bet.

Truly a wonderful alphabet. I would say that all alphabets and languages stem from these 22 letters.

Upvoted and Resteemed. Soon everyone on Steemit will be learning this wonderful Alephbet.

Another Great lesson. @hebrew. .... I would say that yod is a very important letter. Upvoted.

Probably the most important letter... or Bet or maybe aleph ....

I really appreaciated your affort thanks bro sharing this for new learner..

I have tried to upload to Dtube but had a lot of problems when I try to upload my thumbnail to the video.... I get error messages and can't upload

thank you as always!

תודה רבה כרגיל.

נ.ב- גם האות הזו מרכיבה את שם ה' ונחשבת לאות קדושה ביהדות. רבנים רבים ממליצים להורים טריים להוסיף לפחות אות אחת שמרכיבה את שם ה' לשם של התינוק שלהם בשביל סגולות ומזל טוב

There could be an entire blog talking only about Hebrew names and how they impact the person who has each and the parallels to each of their lives related to their names.
Thank you.

is there are such a blog which can related there names with lifes that's seems interesting what is that blog ?

none that I know of, but I will talk about some of them as I get further in teaching reading and understanding. Dani el (God is m y judge)

This blog.... after the letter Tov I am sure.

I would also like to find a blog that compares Hebrew words to Aramaic ... like Ben and Bar for the word "Son" and Ben Adam and Bar Enosh for the "Son of Man"

There seems to be so much debate over what language Jesus spoke...Hebrew or Aramaic and even the type of Aramaic. Syriac or Galilean ?

  ·  7 years ago (edited)

ok that's good then i will be awaiting for it ...thank you for reply

what kind of power is meant by yad @hebrew. whether power in doing everything, or power that has boundaries? thanks for sharing great article my friend.

Power in the sense it is a closed fist ? Or right hand of the Lord ?

Great experience ,,,,,,,,
thank you so much...........////////

this is fascinating me to learn even more thanks for sharing :)

very useful and interesting to learn thanks for sharing this :)

so "yad"is right bro

Try not to get caught up in the English representation of a word (in any language) because none of them are right, only close. All of them are good to get people started in saying the words in Hebrew, French, Spanish, etc.

yad or ye-odd or yodd are all ok to teach you how to say "hand" in Hebrew.

I hope to add meaning to these little lessons each Shabbat as we go. Then we can read together with the vowel points in place and see how it all jives with English.

Surely we all will :) <3

keep it comming friend!

Awesome post. I want to learn Hebrew and when I saw this post I knew I need to reply, follow and and upvote. Thank you so much for making this possible for me and others to learn Hebrew online without having to break the bank.

Upvoted and restemed. As a Christian your work is important...

If Jesus is God (One with the Father as he says in Matt 10) and Jesus spoke the Hebrew language and used the Hebrew Aleph Bet .... you would think that every follower of Jesus would want to know every word he spoke in Hebrew.

I agree.... I never understood why more Christians who want to imitate Christ do not try to learn to read and write and speak Hebrew ... like Jesus did. If Christians want to be like Jesus why would they not learn how to live like Jesus... his traditions, his customs, his language, his culture, his prayers, the words he used to teach and to speak with God the father....

Good work bro👍👍👏

posts I like and greetings know from @bachtiar0210 and beg support to from @hebrew

So, from the most ancient meaning of these letters .... yud=hand heh=behold vav=nail. .... The most ancient meaning of these letters Y-H-V-H we get the words hand-behold-nail-behold.

Awesome.

hi! @hebrew, I love reading your blog. I learned something about ivrit languange. Thanks for sharing bro.

Informative article... Resteemed

nice post, thanks for sharing @hebrew Upvoted ,

Very nice👍

I guess it's the equilavent of the Greek giota "ι" which also sounds like "ee" 😁

I know very little about Greek. I am waiting for the other Hebrew manuscripts of the gospels to be found so I can read them as they were written. Since Paul was a Pharisee, it will be wonderful to read his writings in Hebrew as well as the other letters.

Yes bro....///////

I am sure Paul (Sh’aul) wrote in Hebrew. He certainly understands many of the more mystical Jewish concepts better than anyone else. The idea that the Spirit of God dwells within the Temple of 10

I am pretty sure Scribes wrote Hebrew and Pharisees read it. If you want to say Aramaic - that would be what was spoken in the Arabic regions, probably not in the Washinton DC of Israel.

Questions, answers and debates ares cool. But, to me arguing about these things is a horrible witness to the world

I think discussion and debate and archaeology are important as we learn new things each day about this very important language and alephbet. I would like to understand why certain books of the Tanakh come to us in Aramaic.. like the very important book of Daniel. Many of the most Mystical texts are retained in Aramaic... i would like to understand why.

yup waiting to learn from you .

@hebrew,
Got my lesson of Hebrew Lesson #10! Can you please tell me it's pronounce as Yud or Yod?

Here I can see Yud! (That's why I am asking)
If I am not mistaken Yod or Yud is the smallest letter in Hebrew language! Thank you very much for sharing such great article with us! After all I feel great by learning Hebrew the language that used to written the bible!
Have a great weekend friend!
