The language of ivrit ( עברית ) Genesis 46, Post #2

in hebrew •  10 months ago

Welcome to my Hebrew reading & language series.

Genesis 46:6-15

Today's passages starts out saying that Jacob (Israel) came to Mitsraim (Egypt) with all his livestock, possessions, wives, and their sons and daughters and to Mitsraim. Then the texts starts to name the sons of Jacob starting with the first born, Reuben, and listing his children by name.

The sons are listed with details, including that one had died in the land of Canaan, and by which woman (if there were more than one wife of each) the kids had been born. Then at the end it says that the sons and daughters were thirty three in total. One could figure out how many women were in the group if that were desired. The only female of the children to be named is Dinah. You may recall that she was raped and it caused a war in Shechem.

In Hebrew culture of the time, a son would be called a son by his father, grand father or great grandfather. Many times, the offspring of a man was called his line or tribe. Other times it is called his seed.
