The book written by the teacher Ben Sira is a sapiential book of the Bible with valuable advice for daily life, with this important text on biblical spirituality Ben Sira made clear the importance of wisdom to live, and how this science together with the law of Moses are a legacy from God to the people of Israel.
And among his advice, Ben Sira expressed the importance of the works of mercy towards one's neighbor with these wise words: "The Lord has commanded us to help the poor; don´t refuse them the help they need" Ben Sira 29:9.
And this teaching of Ben Sira has a precedent in the Book of Leviticus, which is a Book of the Pentateuch that states the following: "Do not defraud or rob your neighbor" Leviticus 19:13, "Do not seek revenge or bear a grudge against anyone among your people, but love your neighbor as yourself" Leviticus 19:18. These are precepts of the law that highlight the importance of one's neighbor, and that point out the correct path in life, the path of righteousness and mercy (compassion, kindness, gentleness).
The Bible teaches that God is the wisdom itself, and that this divine quality has accompanied God from eternity itself, and this wisdom is progressive, gradual, and expansive, and this is why the spiritual gifts, when lived, seek to free others, those who need our help, from their situation of deprivation and misery, and these precepts of wisdom that are both in Leviticus and the Book of Ben Sira express this truth.
The masters of wisdom seek with their knowledge to show how is that spiritual path that is free of destructive unforeseen events and that builds a better society; one's own happiness is something very important, but this does not mean that we neglect the happiness of others, a truth that Jesus also taught in the parable of the Good Samaritan.
In order to understand a society and to know how far or close it is to the correct order of things, that is, to communion, one must know how the most deprived of that society live, such as orphans, widows and the sick, and this is what Ben Sira wanted to express with his teaching. The wisdom of God expressed in the advice of the wise and the precepts of the law teach people to be better every day.
