Psalm 3 is a plea addressed to God requesting his spiritual help and protection. Tradition attributes its authorship to King David, and it was most likely composed when David saw his life in danger due to the betrayal of his son Absalom who wanted to take the position of King in his father's place. The historical context to which this Psalm is referred is related in 2 Samuel 15:13-37, and describes David's escape from Jerusalem to avoid a bloodshed in the holy city.
David was a God-fearing man and a great military leader. Because of his fear, David was a man who lacked hatred, and David loved his son Absalom, but Absalom moved by greed threatened the life of the King, that is why David wrote Psalm 3; in this prayer for help, King David put all his trust in God, because the Lord protects the righteous and punishes the sinners.
This psalm in the Christian tradition is extremely important because this Psalm is especially indicated for all those people who suffer persecution due to their faith and who do not have a clear way out of their problems.
With these wise words the Psalm 3 begins, invoking God's protection:
"LORD, how many are my foes!
How many rise up against me!
Many are saying of me,
´God will not deliver him.´
But you, LORD, are a shield around me,
my glory, the One who lifts my head high.
I call out to the LORD,
and he answers me from his holy mountain" Psalm 3:1-4.
This Psalm is also a psalm especially used as a morning prayer, because with these words the hymn continues:
"I lie down and sleep;
I wake again, because the LORD sustains me" Psalm 3:5.
The Psalm ends by recognizing the power of God over all things and that only from him comes the true blessing on the people and the entire nation:
"Arise, LORD!
Deliver me, my God!
Strike all my enemies on the jaw;
break the teeth of the wicked.
From the LORD comes deliverance.
May your blessing be on your people" Psalm 3:7-8.
