The sapiential books like the Book of Psalms teach the constant opposition between good and evil, and how the wise oppose the foolish. There are two mentalities or discernments and two paths completely opposite to each other, and men have the freedom to choose, and about this spiritual truth taught in Psalm 1, the Psalm of the Two Ways, all the teachings of the Psalms are developed.
The Psalm 35, which is a prayer for help addressed to the Lord, shows with wisdom how a God-fearing man is persecuted by the oppression and the contempt of sinners. Most likely the author of the Psalm was King David, who first suffered the betrayal of King Saul, and then that of his son Absalom who attempted to usurp his throne when he was king of Israel. These events deeply marked David's personality, and it would not be strange if this man devoted to God expressed his sufferings in a beautiful psalm.
This is how Psalm 35 begins, requesting the help of the Lord, and recognizing the wise God as the only savior and shield, in a world dominated by lies, deceit, and private and secret wars:
"Contend, LORD, with those who contend with me;
fight against those who fight against me.
Take up shield and armor;
arise and come to my aid.
Brandish spear and javelin
against those who pursue me.
Say to me,
´I am your salvation.´" Psalm 35:1-3.
And so the Psalm continues, showing God as the supreme judge, and with the psalmist invoking the accomplishment of the divine laws:
"May all who gloat over my distress
be put to shame and confusion;
may all who exalt themselves over me
be clothed with shame and disgrace.
May those who delight in my vindication
shout for joy and gladness;
may they always say, ´The LORD be exalted,
who delights in the well-being of his servant.´" Psalm 35:26-27.
In retribution for his cause, the psalmist expresses the promise to praise God all the days of his life:
"My tongue will proclaim your righteousness,
your praises all day long" Psalm 35:28.
