Downvoting a post can decrease pending rewards and make it less visible. Common reasons:

Whenyou hit "Promote" button it will destroy money which will then lead to less amount of money in circulation which makes each STEEM more valuable. It will also give you an upvote from a guy who runs a bot which reacts to destroying (aka burning) money. You said that you also have to power down so my guess is that you also have money problems and therefore I cannot ask you to send me money.
