Dogs that smell narcotics and other things that are considered illegal for transportation through airports, is something we have long been used to seeing, writes the BBC.

But officials at Vantaa Airport in Helsinki, Finland, have begun using dogs to sniff out people infected with COVID-19.

A team of volunteers are training 15 dogs and 10 instructors as part of a research program. Dogs can detect coronavirus in humans five days before they develop severe symptoms, said Anna Hielm-Bjorkman, a professor at the University of Helsinki.

"They are very good at detecting coronavirus. "They are very close to 100 percent in terms of detecting COVID-19," added Hielm-Bjorkman.

Passengers are asked to "wipe" the neck with a cloth, which is then placed in a can and the dog begins to smell it. This test is performed in less than a minute.
