Can we make a better fencing mask?

in hema •  7 years ago  (edited)

Since I started practizing Historical European martial arts more than 2 years ago I have asked myself this question, and the answer is of course Yes! .

Fencing masks have not changed Their design for ages, It is possible to find designs from the 19th century that are similar to the masks we use today.

The materials have changed - somewhat, but the overall shape is the same. Why is this? I decided to try and design an alternative. I wanted it ti have integrated throat and neck protection since my sports needs this and I wanted a visor that could be opened, so I wouldnt have to take the mask of every time.

Since I work alot in 3dmodelling software (blender specifically) I decided to start by making a mockup of what I was thinking in 3d. this is the result so far.

What do you think?

Do you have any experience with olympic fencing HEMA or any other weapon based martial art and do you have any suggestions for improvements?

If so please comment below

A modern day bascinet.

yeah pretty much. I went for a modern-classic helmet design and looked alot at real helmets for inspiration.

Great designs, it would be coold to 3d print it and see in real life.

Yes. It definitely needs to be made in some real version. I think i will make someting a bit more durable than a print though.

So print it as mold and line it with carbon fiber and resin.

yeah I guess that could work.
